Message from Mr. Imbusch
Dear students, staff, and parents/guardians:
College is not the only choice students have after high school. Many students go into the trades, join the military, take a gap year, join the workforce, etc.
For those students who do plan to attend college, our School Counseling Department does a phenomenal job guiding them through the process.
Those who know me well, know that one of my major hangups with college is the cost. Walpole is very fortunate to have many, many scholarships available to students, generated both at the school and from the Walpole Scholarship Foundation.
In this New York Times special section, Ann Carrns and Tara Siegel Bernard provide answers to high-school students’ questions about college. Click the link below to read experts’ advice on each question:
Is college worth it?
Why is paying for college in the U.S. so complicated?
Why is college so expensive, and what the heck is FAFSA?
Pre-college decisions – AP courses, visiting colleges, applying early decision, and more
Choosing a college – private vs. public, for-profit, community college, vocational
Loans – federal, subsidized and unsubsidized, co-signer, payments, forgiveness
Special circumstances – divorced parents, in school abroad, military, DACA students
A glossary of terms to know
“How Do I Pay for College? Your Questions, Answered by Experts” by Ann Carrns and Tara Siegel Bernard, illustrated by Sean Dong, in The New York Times, January 21, 2024
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Stephen Imbusch
Principal

Message from the Librarian, Ms. Lamar
Thank you to those who entered the Massachusetts School Library Association bookmark contest. A finalist has been chosen and that entry has been entered into the state contest! Winners will be announced on March 17th! Good luck!
Humane Society
The Humane Society will be collecting donations for local shelters. We will be collecting towels, paper towels, unopened dog/cat food, gently used collars and leashes, gently used toys, dog beds, sanitizing wipes and other pet supplies. There will be a box in the front lobby for donations. All monetary donations are making a difference at local shelters, like the sponsoring of a puppy cage through the Great Dog Rescue of New England.
Yearbook Announcement
Our deadline for the main book is quickly approaching, so if you were thinking of sending in candid pictures of the graduating class, please do so before February break. Share your favorite pictures from childhood through today. The more pictures we receive, the more personal the Yearbook will be. Speech and Debate
The Speech and Debate Team competed at the National Speech and Debate Association’s national qualifier this past Saturday.
Congratulations to Sarah Mukkuzhi, who qualified in Lincoln-Douglas Debate for the second year in a row and made team history! She is the first Walpole student to qualify at NSDA quals in consecutive years. Another congratulations goes out Shayna Jain, who qualified in Informative Speaking. She and Sarah are one of three students in each of their events to represent the New England District at the NSDA National Tournament at Des Moines in June!
A huge thank you to parent judges and alumni judges: Former Debate President Reshma Abraham ‘19, who is working as a business analyst at a pharmaceutical company in Cambridge! We also thank Former Debate President Lindsay Navick ‘20!
