Welcome to another edition of the program newsletter.

• We hope you enjoy February vacation.

• In this edition of the Informativo Smore you will be able to listen to the first radio theater in Spanish. Do not miss it, they are excellent!

• We added a section to our Newsletter called “Beyond the Spanish Classroom.” At the February 1st meeting of the DLPAC (Dual Language Parents Advisory Council) Mrs. Zamira Carroll shared with parents excellent resources that students can use independently to advance in the learning of Spanish. Each month we will include one resource for them to explore.

• On Friday, February 11, Mrs. Espinoza visited all the classes at the HS to speak with students about the courses and sequence offered by the program in order to complete the 4-year requirement at FHS. They had the opportunity to ask questions and set goals to maximize their experience throughout the program.

• Soon you will receive information for the Seniors in the program, please remind your student to check their emails.

• All TW 8th graders will take the STAMP test as the program assessment on March 3rd during the half-day. Students will complete the practice on March 1st during the Spanish Language Arts classes. As a way to celebrate 25 years of the program during February and March, we would like to create a Bilingual Digital Cooking Book with recipes from the 33 country represented in the program this year. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!! Please send us your favorite recipe either in English or Spanish, make sure you include photos or videos, whatever is easier.

Radio theater is a new academic activity that stimulates spoken language. Sixth grade students worked in groups and created an original script based on the short reading of "Chanclas" written by Sandra Cisneros. The script included vocabulary from the reading. Students recorded their script in the radio theater. Click in Radio Teatro to listen to them.

Now that we have reached the midpoint of the school year, we would like to share a quick reminder of the supplies your students needs in order to have a successful classroom experience. If you need assistance with supplies, please let your child's teacher know.

Supplies:

• A fully charged Chromebook, every day! Please encourage your student to charge his/her Chromebook at home every night. Chromebooks left at home and/or left uncharged cause disruptions for the entire class
• Pencils/Pens (blue & black)/Erasers - please make sure your student has an adequate supply for school every day
• Headphones

We are finishing our religions unit, with this week’s final look at Asian religions (Buddhism and Hinduism). During the past few weeks students have learnt about Abrahamic religions as well as different concepts related to this field of study. They have also been practicing how to take notes and putting their notes to use later in different assignments and research.

Dear Families,

We just finished our unit on Ancient Egypt. As part of their study, students learned about the accomplishments of several important pharaohs and theorized about the necessary character traits the pharaohs must have had in order to be successful leaders. As part of this project, students created an image that represented what the pharaoh’s life would look like in modern times.

Students also learned about daily life in Egypt. They created a script and recorded their script in the new “Radio Teatro.” -- stay tuned for our next radio recordings!

We finished our unit on governments and enlightenment philosophers. We focused on questions such as, What rights do people have? What is the purpose of the government? Who controls the government in the 4 different types of governments we studied. We are currently starting our unit on the Constitution of the United States. Students are analyzing how the ideas of the philosophers we studied were applied in writing the Constitution.

The sixth graders have started the third Unit “Un gran Esfuerzo” based on the theme of Child Labor. In pairs, they are reading the short text “Trabajo ed Campo”, while learning about the struggles of day laborer children in California.

On February 14th, students made a mural expressing what Amor es… for them.

The 7th graders are finishing up the book, Tomando Partido. We have been talking and writing about the different themes found in the book and how those themes can impact an adolescent. Discussions have been centered around what change means and the effects it can have on a teenager, how judging or being judged can affect someone, and how relationships can change as you grow. Students will have a culminating project where they will chose a theme they resonate with and create a PowerPoint presentation showing how the theme is seen in the book and how they individually connect with the theme.

We have finished reading the book, Nacer bailando, and are now presenting projects that your student worked on with a partner around a theme of their choosing. We continue to work on our grammar and utilize it in our daily activities. After February vacation we will view a movie that discusses the theme of identity. We will end the unit with an identity project.

This month we continue to study the narrative genre, specifically folktales. Students are reading Story of a seagull and the cat who taught him to fly, Historia de una gaviota y el gato que le enseñó a volar, written by the Chilean Luis Sepúlveda. When looking at language resources students are comprehending and recognizing main literary figures and are able to analyze what we read. We have also started working on this term's project which is to write a story.

Students are reading contemporary novels, specifically the work Persona Normal, by the Mexican author, Benito Taibo, a reading that allows us to get closer to the description of its characters and their environment. Students are also researching and writing about the cultural context of the play, Mexico. We are focused on improving their writing skills this semester.

Can you believe that we are in mid February and ready to take a well deserved break? Students enrolled in the AP Language and Culture classes have been busy designing and creating new inventions and gadgets just like the ones from the popular show “Shark Tank.” Kudos to all new inventors and investors, who have been doing this to prepare for the technology and science theme of the AP.

El Salvador is a beautiful country with year round Spring like weather, unfortunately during the 80’s it suffered a devastating civil war. In Advanced Lit, we are learning about this dark era through the reading of Disparo en la catedral by Mario Bencastro. We are also learning about one of the most loved and remembered martyrs who forged the history of “El pulgarcito de America”, through his life, his work, his kindness, his courage, and his legacy, Monseñor Romero.

From the 16th century we jumped to the 17th century and compared the sonnet XXIII by Garcilaso vs sonnet CLXVI by Góngora, taking into account everything from grammar, poetry metrics, historical times and their effects on literary resources.

We are now focusing on taking a practice test similar to the real one that takes place in May.

Students from AP Seminar start their final Individual Multimedia Presentation project this month. Each student is researching a topic and will develop a 6–8 minute presentation using appropriate media. Next month, they will present their findings to their peers. This presentation is an opportunity for students to present their conclusions by building arguments that convey their perspectives. The presentations should use the evidence to support students’ own arguments and situate their perspectives in their larger contexts rather than merely summarizing student research. Finally, students defend their research process, use of evidence, and conclusion through oral responses to two questions asked by the teacher. This project will be assessed on the College Board’s Individual Presentation and Oral Defense Rubric.

In this section we will offer parents tools that help their children to continue developing Spanish outside the classroom setting.

Spanish Cognates are words in Spanish and English that share the same Latin and/or Greek root, are very similar in spelling and have the same or similar meaning. Most often, cognates are words in two languages that have a common etymology and thus are similar or identical.
