A Letter to Myself - Activity for both Students and Teachers
Have your students write a letter to themselves about where they are right now, what they hope to learn, and where they hope to be. Then, have them read their letters at the end of the year and see how they have changed.
This is a great exercise for teachers to do as well, specifically to reflect on the school year and all it would bring.

The Boy Crisis by Warren Farrell, PhD & John Gray, PhD
It is a crisis of education. For the first time in American history, our sons will have less education than their dads. It is a crisis of mental health. As boys become young men, their suicide rates go to six times that of young women. It is a crisis of sexuality. They are bombarded with mixed messages, afraid of being too sensitive or not sensitive enough. It is a crisis of fathering. Boys with less-involved fathers are more likely to drop out of school, drink, do drugs, become delinquent, and end up in prison. It is a crisis of purpose. Boys' old senses of purpose- being a warrior, a leader, or a sole breadwinner are fading. Many boys are experiencing a "purpose void", feeling alienated, withdrawn, and addicted to immediate gratification. Compounding this is addicting video games.
The Boy Crisis is a comprehensive blueprint for what parents, teachers, and policymakers can do to renew our sons' sense of purpose to help them become men, fathers, and leaders worthy of our respect.
Practicing Presence by Lisa J. Lucas
Most teachers enter the field of education to make a difference in children's lives. But many end up, as author Lisa Lucas puts it, "tired, wired, and running in circles". This leads to many teachers abandoning the profession or to burnout many veteran teachers.
When teachers care for themselves deeply and deliberately, they are better able to care for the people that matter most in their lives-- their students, friends, and families. Practicing Presence focuses not on doing, but rather on being present in the life of the classroom. This book will give readers the feeling of having a personal coach who provides suggestions and routines so that they not only can deal with being overwhelmed but rise above it.
