As a school of choice, our mission at Clark-Shaw Magnet School is to develop students into globally aware and productive citizens who excel academically and are responsible, courteous, life-long learners. This will be accomplished by providing a challenging curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment.

October equals changes at Clark- Shaw Magnet School. Second Quarter begins October 10th, academic competitions begin, new athletic seasons begin, recruitment for new students begin, and current students finally settle into magnet life. This school year will end before you know it. I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the magnet contract and student handbook now. Become familiar with the academic and attendance requirements for the magnet program. This information is vital when determining your child’s overall needs. I suggest parents check grades weekly to ensure students are completing assignments, homework, and preparing for assessments. Students are allowed to retest one failed major assessment per quarter. When parents routinely check grades, students complete retests in a timely manner. These are just a few reminders parents have found useful this year.

For Homecoming Spirit Week activities, students must be in compliance with the uniform policy. Please note that school uniform pants or skirts and school uniform shoes MUST be worn on all days except Thursday. Throwback Thursday is the ONLY day during Homecoming Week that students do not have to wear uniform pants or skirts. Instead, students can dress in a decade outfit, but no shorts, ripped or torn clothing, tank tops, spaghetti straps, or revealing/inappropriate items should be worn.

Come cheer on the Clark-Shaw Eagles as they take on Chastang for the final game of the season on Thursday, Oct. 6! Let's keep our undefeated at home record! It's Homecoming Week!!

We are excited about our new partnership with the Junior League of Mobile. Its newest signature project, Adopt-a-School, provides food items and other basic necessities including clothing, uniform, hygiene supplies, and other items to any Clark-Shaw student in need due to financial setbacks or other hardships.

The Language Arts department would like to remind parents and students of the 2nd quarter required novels. Each student needs a copy of the required grade-level novel for second quarter, which begins on Tuesday, October 11.

Archery practices every Monday and Tuesday from 3:00 -4:15 pm. Their first tournament is October 20-22th at Causey Middle School. More details will be shared soon.

The Clark-Shaw Robotics Team traveled to Troy University's Kick-Off for this year's BEST Robotics Competition on September 10th. They will be competing at Troy University on November 5, 2022 in the areas of robot design, notebook, marketing, web page, and this year’s game Made 2 Order. They are currently looking for sponsors! The University of South Alabama College of Education and Professional Studies and South Alabama Athletics selected 6th grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Miranda Manley, as one of its Extra Yard for Teachers Classroom Project winners. Her proposal features a book study using Making History Come Alive through Captured: An American Prisoner of War in N. Vietnam (the Jeremiah Denton Story). She received a $250 gift card and was invited, along with a guest, to the Extra Yard for Teachers Jags Football game on Saturday, September 24th, where she was recognized with the other recipients. Congratulations, Mrs. Manley!

Do you know an upcoming 6th, 7th or 8th grader who would excel at Clark-Shaw Magnet School? Help us spread the word about our school and encourage parents and families to choose Clark-Shaw for next year. The magnet school application process will begin soon. The first application period will run from October 10 through October 31. The lottery drawing will take place the week of Nov 14-18th, and acceptance emails will be sent before Thanksgiving. Parents have 10 days to accept a seat. There will be another application window and lottery later in the year, but encourage those you know who are considering Clark-Shaw to apply for magnet school early!

Science Fair project proposal forms were due to science teachers this past week. Remember, once the project idea is accepted by your science teacher, you must do that project! The next Science Fair component - the research plan - is due Wednesday, Oct. 26. Basketball season is just around the corner! Please remember that tickets to all Clark-Shaw athletic events must be purchased through Go Fan at the following link: [click here]. Tickets will not be sold at the door or gates. Come out and support our student athletes! Go Eagles!!

Students are required to remain in uniform if you stay after school for athletic events. You cannot change clothes for safety and security reasons. Your school uniforms help us easily identify our CSMS students for supervision purposes and in case an emergency arises. However, if you are attending with a parent, this rule does not apply.

All students should be picked up promptly after each event or you will lose your attendance privileges.

Our Lady Eagles volleyball team wrapped up their season on Monday, September 26 with a home match against Calloway-Smith. Thank you to the players for working hard and representing Clark-Shaw with character and sportsmanship throughout the season. Thank you coaches Tamara Woods and Amber Washington for your time and energy, and thank you to the parents and families who supported the team each week!

The students for Scholars' Bowl have been selected and practices have begun! The first tournament is Thursday, October 20 vs. St. Luke's and Christ the King in Daphne, AL. This year tournaments will return to in-person events after being held virtually the past couple of years. Wish our students well as they prepare!

To help students learn about college and career readiness, teachers decorated their doors to represent different colleges and universities during the week of September 26th. On Friday, September 30, all students who have not received demerits this year were allowed to dress in their favorite college t-shirt and tennis shoes. Keep up the great work, students!

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to serve as Clark-Shaw Ambassadors for the 2022-2023 year! These students help at various events and programs throughout the year and give tours to prospective students and their families.

8th grade ambassadors Kiera Quiovers and Ammarie Seals helped greet parents and families at the Clark-Shaw Open House on September 13th.

Student Council representatives and officers have been elected for the 2022-2023 school year! Student Council plans activities and projects designed to improve our school, serve our community, and give a voice to the students. Student Council meetings will be held after school twice a month on Tuesdays from 3:00 - 4:00 pm in Mrs. Mattern's room (220), with their first meeting planned for Tuesday, October 4th. Congratulations to these students!

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated during the last week of October. This is an annual event to promote alcohol, tobacco, and drug awareness among youth and to foster a sense of community and common purpose. In the Mobile County Public School System, each school nominates a student to lead our school-wide campaign and coordinate a service project. This year's Clark-Shaw Red Ribbon Leader is 8th grader Kimberlyn Brown. Kimberlyn is planning a fundraiser to support the Ronald McDonald House in honor of her young foster sister. Congratulations, Kimberlyn!

To demonstrate their knowledge of the Periodic Table, 8th graders will dress up as their assigned elements on Friday, Oct. 28th. This is always a fun day to see what our students come up with for their physical science class! As you see them throughout the day, be sure to ask them about their assigned element!

If you love history, you should consider getting involved in National History Day! Clark-Shaw students have been successful at the local and state levels and have even had projects compete in national competitions! This year, we will be hosting a small group of students after school on Wednesdays to learn useful research skills and deeply investigate historical topics. See Mr. Roberts for more information.

Help support Eagle Wings Service Club's project for October! They are collecting pairs of socks through November 4 for the Sybil Smith Family Village. This is a shelter through the Dumas Wesley Community Center that assists families in need. Eagle Wings is open to all students in grades 6-8. On Friday, September 16th at its home football game vs. McGill-Toolen, Murphy High School hosted area middle school band students for its Band Night. Clark-Shaw Magnet School had several students participate. Pictured below are Brandon Gamble, Gabrien Pham, Chloee Vice, and Alexis Loper. This was a great opportunity to preview band at the high school level and to experience the excitement of playing for Friday night football crowds!

Members of the Jazz Band practice after school. They have a winter concert planned for December 8th and a performance at Bellingrath Gardens for the Magic Christmas in Lights on December 14.

Students in PLTW (Project Lead the Way) used the Engineering Design Process to create ankle foot orthosis for children with cerebral palsy and spatial hemophilia.

7th graders enjoy some cozy reading spots that Mrs. Morris has created in our media center for students!

In September, our 8th graders visited the University of South Alabama Archeology Museum as part of their world history curriculum.

7th graders visited the Montgomery Zoo on Wednesday, September 28.

After visiting the Montgomery Zoo in the morning, 7th grade students toured the Alabama state capitol building.

Every morning during Homeroom, students should log into Clever on their Chromebooks and go to the "Rhithm" app and answer the daily prompt. Student responses and feedback help our counselors identify students who may need support.

Please consider joining or helping our PTA! Joining PTA does NOT require you to volunteer on campus. But for those who would like to help, several opportunities are available, including dance committee, awards committee, concessions and ticket sales, Spring Fling, and other events. As you probably know already, flu season is upon us. To prevent widespread flu cases in our school, please use the following guidelines to determine whether or not to send your child to school:

DEFINITELY KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME IF HE/SHE HAS ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS:

• Fever of 100 degrees or greater (student may return to school ONLY AFTER his/her temperature has been below 100 degrees for 24 hours WITHOUT THE USE OF FEVER REDUCING MEDICATIONS)
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Chills
• General malaise or feelings of fatigue, weakness or body aches

Consult your child’s physician for possible evaluation if any of the above symptoms last more than 24 hours.

The best defense for fighting any type of illness is practicing and reinforcing the following good hygiene habits both at home and at school:

• Frequent handwashing
• Keep hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
• Cover mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing. Wash hands or use sanitizer after.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home if you or your child are sick

The Mobile County Public School System is using "One Voice Matters," which is an anonymous reporting system for students to share information about bullying, threats, or abuse that may be impacting them or someone they know at school. To participate, students can text OVMCPS to 444999 or go to https://www.myovm.com/ and click on "Submit a Report."

Schoology is the learning management system used by Mobile County Public Schools. It is the platform teachers use to take attendance, assign grades, and publish instructional materials for students. Absent students should log into Schoology and check each course for assignments and instruction they missed. Parents and guardians, you are asked to please monitor your child's progress regularly.
