This Week @ PS 88Q
April 25th, 2022
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
This week we are hitting the ground running right away! Our grade 3, 4 and 5 students are taking the NYS Math Test on Tuesday April 26th and Wednesday April 27th. It is imperative that all students taking the test MUST BE ON TIME AND PRESENT THOSE DAYS. If you have any concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher.
As soon as the health and safety guidelines allowed us more opportunities, we ran with it! This week we are hosting an in house trip for all of our students in Grades K-5. The Cosmic IQ experience will be housed in the gym for the upcoming week and classes will be visiting the exhibit "Deep Oceans". For more information, click https://cosmiciq.com/. Our students will participate in this amazing experience, learning about the wonder and beauty of our oceans. This is so special, especially in celebration of Earth Day.
This weeks newsletter is chock full of information, especially regarding Summer Rising. I hope everyone has a wonderful last week of April.
Enrollment for Summer Rising 2022 will launch on April 25!
This summer, DOE and DYCD plan to serve a record number of students through Summer Rising, a free, safe, and fun academic and enrichment program for NYC students currently in grades K-8.
We encourage families to apply early to secure a spot at their preferred location. Enrollment is quick and easy, and it can be completed from any device with an internet connection or by contacting your school’s Parent Coordinator. This year, families can submit one enrollment per child, so please choose your site carefully.
Administrative Professionals Day!
Administrative Professionals Day for the year 2022 is celebrated/ observed on Wednesday, April 27.
We celebrate our amazing school secretarties, Ms. Heinz, Ms. Guardi and Ms. Pepe! Please show them some love by writing them on a note on this padlet.

Gifted and Talented For Current Pre-K Students
Last week the Department of Education announced an update to the Gifted & Talented program, see the press release here.
This admissions process differs slightly depending on where (or if) a child of this age attends pre-K.
For DOE children currently attending DOE schools, Pre-K Centers, NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs), or charter schools
- All pre-K students will be evaluated by their current teachers.
- If eligible, children will be nominated for G&T admissions.
- Families of nominated children will receive a G&T eligibility letter before the application opens, inviting them to apply; if interested, they can apply when the application is open, between May 31 and June 13.
- All eligible children who apply will be considered for offers.
For children not attending district schools, Pre-K Centers, NYCEECs, or charter schools
- Interested families can apply when the application is open, between May 31 and June 13.
- After the application closes, early childhood education experts will contact applicants to schedule an interview.
- If eligible, children will be nominated for G&T admissions.
- All eligible children will be considered for offers.
Notification will be sent to families this summer, including offers and waitlist information. Siblings of students in schools with Gifted & Talented programs will have priority for admission, consistent with previous policies.
If your child is currently in our PreK, and you would like your child to be considered for a G & T program for next year, please reach out to your child's teacher.
