April 2022 Edition
Principal's Corner: April means Spring Sports are in 'full swing' and State Testing is about to launch!
I hope everyone has a fantastic spring break April 4th-8th! Time that we get to dedicate to rejuvenation and recharging is so important for both the adults in schools and for the students themselves. I wish for all of you to get to spend some time with friends and family in community and out in the sunshine!
Our spring sports are in full swing! If you have not yet been out to catch a game or meet, please look up our spring sports schedule and join us for some fun in the sun! Our teams are off to a hot start and look to continue their winning ways well into April.

When we return from spring break, our 10th grade students will be beginning the state SBAC testing in their ELA classes. Math testing will occur in early May. This exam is a key indicator for our students on their readiness for post high school success and serves as graduation pathway. Our Assessment Administrator and Assistant Principal, Ms. Ambra Bryant, has prepared a letter for families that gives some information about the required state testing, which you can find below in our newsletter.
In this edition of the Hawks Happenings monthly newsletter, I also share information for our incoming 9th grade families, celebrations and recognitions from the Five Star Hawks program, and the Winter Hawks Highlight Video put on by our fabulous Advanced Media students.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to us, otherwise I look forward to continuing to see so many of our families out for our Spring Sports contests and other family events.
Go Hawks!

Smarter Balanced State Assessments: Spring 2022
This spring students in grade 10 will take the Smarter Balanced tests in math and English language arts. Students in grade 11 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS).
The results from these tests will give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be ready for college or career. For students in grade 10, the Smarter Balanced tests can also be used as a graduation pathway.
Most students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests:
ELA: April 18-29
Math: May 2-13
Science: May 9-13
Parents, please make sure your student comes to school with their Chromebook/device charged everyday during our assessment window! Students are also encouraged to bring their own headphones/earbuds as well, and to have a healthy nutritious breakfast before school.
Here is a link to more information about the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests.
Here is a link to try out an online Smarter Balanced practice test or WCAS training test.
Please call or email Assistant Principal, Ambra Bryant if you have questions about state testing, abryant@cpps.org or 509-522-3312
Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your student. We want your student to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities.
Sincerely,
Ambra Bryant, Assistant Principal
Five Star Hawks Recognition: Disciplined Life
I am thrilled to share with you our February round of Five Star Hawks award winners! We focused on Disciplined Life and the students were also awarded a certificate for their excellence!
Jio Herrerra: "Hardest working kid I've met in and outside of the classroom."
Chloe Delagadillo: "Chloe is an outstanding young lady who exemplifies what it means to be a CP Hawk. She is patient, kind, respectful, and responsible. She demonstrates how to be an exceptional human being while also being involved in activities, and excelling in the classroom. She has stepped up to conquer academic challenges and is a clear leader both inside and outside the classroom. As a teacher, I know that she is dependable and someone I can use as an anchor to ensure whatever group she is a part of will not only understand and follow directions, but will be strategic and disciplined in finishing the task at hand. "
Omar Gaspar: "Juan has shown such an immense amount of discipline. His quiet demeanor and work ethic lend well to getting his work done every single class period. He never complains and never has to be redirected. He's such a joy to have in class!"
Gisela Soto: "She is one of our Managing Editors for YBK for the last couple of years. When others need a break, she chooses to power through and does not take breaks as she knows deadlines are looming. She has busy work schedules, high workload with classes but her commitment toward excellence is unsurpassed. Serving as an Editor for a staff of 40 is challenging but she leads by example and by being supportive. Another attribute of an effective leader is remaining positive and they do this. She never shows stress by being temperamental or aggressive. She has produced books under intense circumstances (from our homes) and has managed to create impressive books. I am impressed with their leadership abilities. Also being an effective and well-honed leader takes time and steady determination...this leader has been part of the YBK and Media program (training in professionalism, project management, organization leadership etc.) throughout her high school careers thus gaining respect from her peers as a leader."
Camila Nateras: "Because she works hard in everything she does. It takes a lot of discipline to be resilient with major life challenges and I am inspired by her way of thinking."
Juan (Tito) Garcia: "Juan comes in every morning at 6:45 to workout, and brings his teammates with him, even if he has to walk here!! He has shown amazing leadership and discipline in his dedication over the past month!!"
Shea Kasenga: "Because she demonstrates a disciplined life through academics and athletics. She works hard no matter what and she is a leader among peers. Even when she is physically unable to participate in sports, she still shows up for her team encouraging them at practice and taking stats at game. She always wears a smile and she is a strong scholar and in moral character."
Ramon Lopez: "He works hard and steadily in class and when done volunteers to help others on the assignment."
Cruzito Velez : "Cruz demonstrates the wisdom of someone much older than his age. He uses a steady pace to complete his work. He seems to always find a way of making others feel like they can accomplish their goals through his calm approach to learning and helping."
Way to go Hawks!
