Welcome back!
On behalf of everyone at The GLOBE Academy, we welcome you back for the spring semester. Although it is not how we envisaged returning to school, we are happy to at least see our students on screen. We are hopeful that this will not last too long and that we will all be back in-person soon, as determined by DeKalb County School District.
It is hard to believe the rapidity with which the Omicron variant has taken hold in the short time we have been apart. Thank you to everyone who chose to have their children tested. You can read all about the success of yesterday's on-campus testing further down this email in the COVID Corner section, along with current guidelines.
We can do this! We look forward to seeing you in-person very soon.
Christi Elliott-Earby, Executive Director
Admissions
Will your student return next August for the 2022-2023 school year? The completion of the 'Intent to Return' form will be due Friday, February 4, 2022. Current students do not need to enter the lottery each year.
New siblings intending to enroll at GLOBE must enter into the lottery. If you have siblings to apply for the lottery, information is included in the survey. Click here to view more details about re-enrollment and siblings.
Campus notes
The ACCESS testing window for English Learner (EL) students will begin Wednesday, January 12 and continue through Friday, March 4. If you have an EL student, you will receive communication from your student’s ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) teacher providing more detailed information. ACCESS stands for Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State.
All students should come to school with at least two masks. One to wear and an extra one in their backpacks. Please also make sure that students have a water bottle with them when coming to school.
Extended Care Program (ECP)
Registration for GLOBE Enrichment spring classes is open. There are enrichment options available Monday through Friday afternoons at both Upper and Lower Campus. Visit our website for class information. We also have a limited number of aftercare spaces available. Email cclines@theglobeacademy.net for details.
Yearbook
If you haven't ordered your yearbook, you can order it here.
Please send us your photos, especially from soccer, volleyball and basketball games. This year, we are using RePlayIt to collect suitable photos for the yearbook. Click here to upload yours (user ID is 416725960). When prompted for a caption, please only list the students’ names and grades.
GLOBE Sports
Basketball & Cheerleading
All games and afterschool activities have been canceled this week. We have rescheduled Renfroe MS for Monday, January 24 and Atlanta Classical for February 1. All of the details for each game remain exactly the same, except for the change of date.
Tennis
Thank you to those who attended the tryouts in December. There will be two further tryout opportunities in 2022. Once we return to in-person tuition, tryouts are currently scheduled for January 12, 13, 19 and 20 at Leslie Beach Tennis Courts, from 4pm to 6pm.
To take part in the tryouts, students will need to bring a racquet, water bottle and you must have a physical on file. We ask that students attend at least one of the days or all if you are interested and if your schedule allows. Teams will be announced by January 21, 2022.
Watching a GLOBE sports event?
The yearbook would love to receive your photos. Please email them directly to yearbook@theglobeacademy.net.
COVID Corner
Yesterday's on-campus testing
Thank you to everyone who attended the COVID-19 testing event on-campus yesterday. Between the staff and student testing events this week, we tested over 450 members of the GLOBE community! This remarkable accomplishment highlights your dedication to upholding CREST values each and every day.
With cases of COVID-19 continuing to skyrocket in Dekalb County and across Metro Atlanta, the results from our testing event will provide us with valuable baseline data on the prevalence of COVID-19 among members of The GLOBE Academy. Of those who were tested, approximately 5% of staff and 8% of students were COVID-19 positive. Although our positivity rates are lower than that of Dekalb County at 29.9%, the number of COVID-19 positive individuals in the GLOBE community is higher than at any other point during the pandemic. Remember to stay vigilant by choosing safer off-campus activities, upgrading to an N95 or KN95 mask, getting vaccinated and boosted, and continuously monitoring for signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
We will continue to offer weekly, rapid antigen COVID-19 testing on-campus throughout the spring semester. More information on the specific dates for testing will be released soon. For those wondering about the results of their COVID-19 test from yesterday, our motto is, "no news is good news". The GLOBE nurses contacted all positive cases yesterday afternoon, so if you did not hear from them, your results are negative. If you have any questions, reach out to Rachael at health@theglobeacademy.net.
Vaccination survey
We would like to determine how many of our students are fully vaccinated. This will allow us to determine which students may not have to quarantine if they are exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, understanding the vaccination coverage in our community will help us to make informed decisions about sporting events and meal time locations during spring semester. To learn more and to notify us, click here.
While we do not currently require COVID-19 vaccines for students, we continue to encourage every eligible community member to get their vaccinations and booster. And, although we will not require a negative COVID test to return to school, we strongly encourage you to test your child 24-48 hours prior to returning to in-person learning if you are able to do so and inform the school of any positive results. Stay tuned for the next time you can receive a test at school for your child(ren).
