A Note from Ms. Costa
I know this is a vulnerable request but I am very open to feedback and would really love to hear how you believe the opening of school has been thus far. I would encourage you to ask questions and clarify anything you are wondering about because my job is to ensure that communication is helpful and our students are learning and feeling safe at school. PLEASE feel free to email me at mpitts@sau50.org.
Thank you for your support,
Michelle

World Language Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Hola from the World Language classroom. My name is Señora Piper and I am your student’s World Language teacher. I began my teaching career in 2010 and have been teaching in Rye since 2017. This year is an extra exciting one for me as I have my own kindergartener here at RES and I am expecting my third child.
Typically, RES students have a half year of Spanish and a half year of French. This year will be a bit different, but nevertheless enriching and wonderful! This year students will have a 15 day session of Spanish and two 15 day sessions of Italian! I will be leaving on maternity leave for the school year starting in early November. I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in Spanish prior to my leave and I am thrilled the students will have the opportunity to learn Italian with the kind and talented Ms. D'Appolonia. I will be back full time to teach the students Spanish and French for the 2023-2034 school year.
If you would like more information about our World Language program here at RES, please feel free to visit the World Language website: https://sites.google.com/sau50.org/world-language/home or contact me by email at cpiper@sau50.org. Thank you for your support at home.
Sincerely,
Señora Piper
Handbook Highlight: ATTENDANCE
ATTENDANCE (school board policy JH*)
Regular school attendance is important and required by law. Consequently, we strongly discourage parent(s)/guardian(s) from extending vacations or making appointments during the school day, as these absences and appointments interrupt a student’s education.
Parents/guardians are asked to make certain children are fully rested and well before rejoining classes following an illness. It is our hope that students understand the importance of regular attendance and punctuality.
We realize that a student may be absent occasionally during the school year for personal illness, death in the family, family emergencies or religious holidays. Teachers will provide opportunities for students to make up for the work they missed. For a prolonged absence, arrangements will be made for schoolwork to be done off site.
If a student is absent because of illness or disciplinary reasons, it is our policy that he/she may not attend school-sponsored activities for the remainder of that day or evening.
The Rye School District is concerned for the safety of students. The following procedure is used to assure that all students arrive at school safely. Please be sure to read this procedure carefully.
The safety of the children is our main priority.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE ASKED TO CALL SCHOOL BEFORE 8:30 A.M. IF A CHILD WILL BE ABSENT OR LATE THAT DAY. THE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS 436-4731.
Although emails are convenient, it is not the most reliable form of communication. For example: the email system could be down or a staff member might be out of the building If you choose to use the email system and you DO NOT receive a reply, please call the school.
1. After morning attendance has been taken in the classrooms, the office will verify that all students who are absent have been reported absent by a parent or guardian.
2. For any child absent but unreported by parent or guardian, a call will be made first to home, then to the parent or guardian’s workplace(s) or to the emergency contact’s number if needed.
3. If a student is absent and we are unable to account for their whereabouts - We will call the Rye Police Department for assistance.
4.Students absent for sickness three or more consecutive days may be asked to supply a doctor note.
