It has been a few busy weeks here at HHS and we wouldn't have had it any other way. As we settle into a long awaited winter break, we want to take an opportunity to thank our faculty, staff, parents, students and the Herricks community for demonstrating courage in the face of adversity. The resilience displayed by all has promoted our growth and deepened our partnerships. We truly are HERRICKS STRONG and we hope you find some peace and comfort during this Winter Break.

The Herricks HS Music Department is overjoyed to continue our December tradition of spreading holiday cheer in our community through expression of music . During this time of distance, safety and navigating the unknown, music continues to be a beacon of light to bring us together as a school and community. Even when we cannot be physically close, the music bonds us. Despite the changes to daily class routines, the students remain passionate, determined, and flexible. We are very proud of what we have been able to achieve musically so far. Thank you to our talented musicians and our directors, Mrs. Birke, Ms. O'Hanlon and Mr. Stickley for sharing this beautiful tribute. Enjoy our 2020 Holiday performance. More to come in 2021! This Student Government sponsored activity was open for all students, Hybrid and Remote, to provide a safe and socially distant way for students to collaborate together outside of school hours helping to lift everyone's spirits.

The students at the Shelter Rock Academy were able to make 100 Gratitude Bags for the Homeless to be donated to Soup to Nuts soup kitchen in Freeport and The Coney Island Hospital Office of Patient Relations.

Each Gratitude Bag contained:

1 Plastic bag w/water bottle & reusable mask

1 Hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo & soap)

1 Emergency Mylar Thermal Blanket + 1 pair Hand Warmers

3 snacks + $5 Gift Card

Hat, Gloves, Socks combo

In collaboration with the HHS TV Studio program, we are highlighting the great work students are doing on their time to build community. Six episodes have been filmed, with more to come! All are available here or check them out individually on the Herricks Cable Channel on Fios.

Once there was a school, and every day the children would come and go—and the school was happy. Then one day, a family came to the school, and although the school had much to give, this family needed more than the school could provide on its own. So the school branched out to the community, who gathered its leaves of generosity…

This year through the giving tree project, we were able to supplement holiday wishes of 7 district families.

For the sixth year, our team has been able to make wishes come true for underprivileged children throughout Nassau County through the NCDSS Adopt A Family Program. This year, 68 children ages 18 months to 17 years had their Holiday wishes granted by the generous staff of Herricks High School, the Herricks Transportation Department and the staff and Administration of the Herricks School District.

We are happy and proud to announce that the Herricks Chapter of DECA had a great day on Saturday competing at the Nassau County Virtual Regional Competition. With 112 members participating we have 76 now eligible to advance to the State Virtual Conference in March. This year instead of meeting face to face to present their ideas on a particular business situation they recorded their ideas, URL links were sent to judges and after a couple days for the judges to review all the work from the various Nassau DECA Chapters we received the results. There were over 900 students that participated in the Nassau County Competition this year.

Although much different this year the weekly virtual club meetings are very well attended, and I give my thanks to the Student Officer team who have gone above and beyond to make sure they were able to meet virtually with the new and younger members who needed help training and learning the many aspects of DECA.

Thanks for Giving and Unity Day

Prior to the beginning of Thanksgiving break, we collected non-perishable items and our peer leaders and faculty members donated money to the Thanks for Giving project. The goal of this project was to provide 10 families in the Herricks community with a box that included everything that would be needed for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. The peer leaders and faculty members did an excellent job and we were able to create 10 decorated boxes for the family members. The Thanksgiving boxes included the non-perishable items that had been collected as well as gift cards for the families to buy anything else which they desired. The boxes were dropped off at the family’s homes a few days before Thanksgiving and were a great way to give back to the community and ensure that these families have an opportunity to have a delicious and enjoyable thanksgiving. Peer Leadership has also been trying its best to spread awareness about bullying throughout our school community. We did this by creating the Unity Day bulletin board that showcased the various different types of bullying that occur and how as a school we should try to eliminate bullying.

In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Herricks community has done their part to ensure those around us are safe, healthy and socially distant. The Future Medical Frontiers Club began researching the impacts of the pandemic since last March. The virus has surely impacted their lives in school and at home. Muminur R, RN attended an FMF Club Meeting via Google Meets to discuss his experiences with the pandemic in a NYC hospital. He provided us with additional tips on how to stay safe, and acknowledged the challenges everyone is facing. He also provided an insight into how our Highlanders can prepare for the medical field now and post graduation.

Have you heard of the BOCES Barry Tech program? Barry Tech is a vocational program, which allows students to attend courses in a particular area of study, for two years, while continuing to attend their high school. You can earn credits while focusing on a potential career option.

This program is held at the Barry Tech location in Westbury, a state-of-the art facility. If you would like to find out about the course offerings to see if this may be a good fit for you, please join the virtual link below, now through December 23, 2020:
