THANK YOU PTO

Thursday afternoon the PTO sponsored Jonathan May, the Magician, as a thank you to students for their hard work on the fall fundraiser. He was outstanding. He captured the kids attention for 45 min. at the end of the day and invited many students to join him. Students laughed, smiled, and watched in amazement. It was a really "magical" way to end our week and our day. Thank you to our PTO for organizing this amazing event for our students!

Student Engagement Survey

In the fall of 2018 students in grades 1-12 participated in a Student Engagement Survey in Urbandale Community School District. Students take this survey two times a year, and we use the data and feedback to improve our work at Jensen and across Urbandale Schools.

Our three highest scores at Jensen were:

*My principal is a good leader

*My teacher cares about me

*Learning is important at my school

We celebrated these things and talked about what we need to keep doing to get these great results!

Additionally, we started to dig into our three lowest scores as a building:

*Students are kind to each other

*I feel safe on the bus

*My school is clean.

Teachers and students from the Character Council and both 5th grade classrooms gave input and ideas for improvement. As a result of their input, we are going to take the following action steps in our building:

1) Our MTSS for Behavior team wrote a lesson on kindness and shared it with all teachers. Teachers in grades K-5 will be teaching this lesson to their kids during January. We will gather feedback and then do more lessons in this way.

2) Mrs. McKenna will continue to implement the Second Step counseling resource and share additional resources with classroom teachers and parents.

3) Mrs. Cole will be starting a 5th grade kindness committee that will meet every other week over lunch and that committee will brainstorm ways to increase kindness at Jensen. Students also had great ideas for how to keep the school more clean that we will work with.

4) Mrs. Cole will meet with the bus students and check in on how things are going at least 1x/month.

Our goal is that by implementing these changes we will see consistent results in our highest scores and improved results in our lowest three scores with the overall goal of improving the educational experience for all of our Jensen superheroes!

FIELD TRIP FORM

Please watch for a district wide field trip permission form. At the December 10th meeting, the Urbandale School Board approved Mr. Bass's recommendation regarding policy 617: Field Trips. The main change is the use of a field trip approval form. This form, printed on yellow paper, will be a permission slip for all field trips for the remainder of the 18-19 school year. It is our hope as a district, that the 19-20 field trip permission form will be available in the registration process and done online.

Please sign and return this form as soon as possible and we will keep it on file for the remainder of the year.

Teachers will still continue to send home notices of when students will be going on field trips so you are always aware of when students will be leaving the building.
