A Message from the Administrative Team
Greenwood Students and Families:
Future and some current parents toured Greenwood on Wednesday as they have a kindergarten student applicant for the 2023-24 school year. We hope to have the new class in place by the end of the month.
We also hosted a group of 40 educators from Brazil on Thursday as they toured the building and visited classrooms. They were all impressed with Greenwood!
On Tuesday, February 7 at the boys’ basketball game, we will not only honor our seniors but also former Director, Dr. Janice Duncan. Please plan to attend the game on Feb. 7 to show your support for our team and pay tribute to Dr. Duncan. A reception during the game will occur on the stage with light refreshments.
Student Council (STUCO) is sponsoring a spirit week and LPA dance next week. Encourage your high school students to attend events during this week as we encourage the school spirit and positive culture it brings to our school. Also, please speak with your student about positive decisions at school events outside of the school day, we want all our students to make good decisions and be safe.
As a reminder, Mrs. Holden is holding a writing lab on Tuesday and Thursday for an hour before and an hour after school. This lab is for students in grades 9-12 and can assist them on current assignments in any class.
We pride ourselves in offering two avenues for our students to obtain college credit, dual credit in-house and con-current enrollment at Missouri State University. Last fall, JUST for dual credit our students earned 266 college credits. This does not include the con-current numbers. So far this semester, we have 28 students (13 seniors; 14 juniors; 1 sophomore) taking spring con-current classes totaling 139 credit hours! This does not include the current dual credit enrollments. When all numbers are obtained this spring, we predict a record year of college credits awarded! What a wonderful opportunity for our students and we want to thank our secondary counselor, Coyeatte Ewing for coordinating both of these efforts.
The second annual Greenwood Showcase will occur on Thursday, March 30. This event will “showcase” student projects, performances, and fine art displays as a way to celebrate the talented students at Greenwood. More information will be forthcoming.
Go Blue Jays! GO Chiefs!

Staff Spotlight: Mr. Michael Jarvis By: Caroline Dugal
When most people hear the word “Greenwood,” they think of athletics, education, and excellent facilities. However, when the families of Greenwood hear the word “Greenwood,” they think of the face in the office who knows almost everything: Michael Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis is the administrative assistant who brings constant laughs to students and is always willing to lend a helping hand in almost anything. Outside of school, Mr. Jarvis enjoys spending time with friends, trying new restaurants, exploring places in the Ozarks, and reading. He is also a cat-lover with a brown, black, and white cat named Bella. In addition to being nicknamed the “King of Greenwood,” he is also a Greenwood alum (2011). He went to Pershing before coming to Greenwood in sixth grade. Following his high school graduation, he attended Missouri State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and a Master’s in Educational Administration. After teaching one year at Saint Agnes, Mr. Jarvis returned to his beloved Greenwood. At the beginning of the new year, he was asked what he is most excited about in 2023, responding that he “is excited about new opportunities in his job and adventures with his friends, and cannot wait to see where this year’s graduating class decides to spread their Blue Jay wings and fly!”
Many of the same teachers Mr. Jarvis had as a student still teach at Greenwood today. Two of his favorites are Mr. Black and Mr. Bond. He enjoyed Mr. Black because of how caring he was and how much he helped him understand and love mathematics. Mr. Bond helped Mr. Jarvis develop writing skills which allowed him to become a better writer and survive college. When asked whether or not the exhibition helped prepare him for college, Mr. Jarvis said it “110%” did. He was able to go into college knowing how to format a paper, conduct research, organize his thoughts, and write a “college-level research paper.” His exhibition was about surgeries and treatments for a specific eye condition that he was born with. He was born legally blind, and his exhibition led him to a surgery which significantly improved his eyesight. When asked if he had any advice for the Class of 2023 as they enter their Senior Exhibition semester, Jarvis said “to not be afraid to reach out to other teachers and the committee members for help because that is what they are there for.” Overall, Michael Jarvis is not only a great person to have at Greenwood, but he loves working at Greenwood, and he feels that he was so lucky to end up working at his high school. His Greenwood education was so special because of his dedicated teachers, and he is humbled and pleased to be part of influencing “future Blue Jay generations.”

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Kathryn Gibson By: Reagan Winegar
From a young age, Ms. Kathryn Gibson, one of Greenwood’s English and Journalism teachers, “learned to value words and the power they have.” The Springfield Catholic graduate received her bachelor’s and first master’s degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia; later receiving her second master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire. Ms. Gibson recalls that she “always loved to read and be able to escape into new worlds and new ideas,” which fueled her desire to become an English teacher and share with others the love that she has. Ms. Gibson has taught at several schools across the United States but her first teaching position was in Couch, Missouri. When reflecting on her time in Couch, Ms. Gibson shared that she had “students who lived down dirt roads in homes with plastic sheeting for windows and dirt floors.” She also recalled being, “invited to a ‘snake church’ where they used copperhead snakes and rattlesnakes during their religious services.” Ms. Gibson says that she has not had any Greenwood students in similar situations, for which she is grateful for.
On her days off, Ms. Gibson can be found watching movies, reading a good book, or playing with her dog and cats. She also plays the guitar and double bass and is learning how to play the handpan. Although she loves what she does, she thinks that her 10 year old self would be “shocked because I wanted to be at various times: an astronomer because I loved space and science fiction; a zoologist because I loved lions and read everything I could about them and had to always bug my parents to take us to the zoo to see them; and a veterinarian because I loved animals of all kinds – except snakes. I do not like snakes.” On behalf of Greenwood, we are very grateful that Ms. Gibson chose to become an English teacher and share her breath of knowledge with us all.

Jamie Alford continued to show that she is one of the state’s best performers in International Extemp – earning 4th place out of over 65 competitors in the event. Jamie also placed 3rd in Informative Speaking. She and her partner, Eleanor Hilotin, also won debates against Lee’s Summit West, Liberty, and North Kansas City before losing a close 2-1 decision against Willard in the quarterfinals. From Mrs. Ewing
The spring semester brings into focus a few things for our secondary students that Mrs. Ewing will spotlight in the upcoming newsletters. These topics include next year scheduling, summer enrichment & leadership programs, and scholarship opportunities for seniors.
NEXT YEAR SCHEDULING: Mrs. Ewing will present next year scheduling information to our sixth through eleventh graders during one of their classes on Thursday and Friday, February 16 and 17. Students will receive direction and information for selecting their courses for the 2023-2024 school year. They will bring home a Selection of Studies form to be reviewed, approved, and signed by parents. These forms will be returned to Mrs. Ewing by March 1. In efforts to provide parents with as much information as possible, Mrs. Ewing, along with Dr. Snodgrass and Mrs. Hopkins, will also offer a zoom presentation for parents to view on Wednesday, February 15, 7-8pm. A zoom link will be sent to parents as the date approaches. Watch for next year scheduling updates in future newsletters as we progress in the master scheduling process.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES: Various summer enrichment & leadership programs are offered in Missouri and across the nation. Participating in these programs provides students with invaluable curriculum enhancement and leadership experience. They will also contribute to the strength of one’s college applications.
Mrs. Ewing will send out notices as she learns of any summer program opportunities. You may also check out various programs listed on the Greenwood Counseling website at Greenwood Laboratory School Counseling Department (greenwoodlabcounseling.com). You are not limited to ones listed on our website. In fact, you will, no doubt, find other opportunities through your own research and networking. This week’s focus is:
2023 Missouri Boys & Girls State sessions: Both programs are offered to rising seniors. Boys & Girls State will be held during the same week - June 24-July 1 - at the same site, on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. Attendees explore & experience many facets of local & state government through fun and meaningful learning formats. Several scholarship opportunities are available and college credit can be earned. Greenwood has a rich history of representation to both Boys and Girls State.
· Boys: Apply at www.moboysstate.org.
· Girls: Apply at www.missourigirlsstate.org/.
Mrs. Ewing will manage your application from Greenwood’s portal. Final application deadline is March 15, 2023. All sponsorship paperwork (pledge form and check to cover sponsorship fee of the citizen) are due to be postmarked by this date. Please note that the earlier you apply and are accepted the more likely you will receive sponsorships to cover your participation fees.
High School Mini-Med School at the University of Missouri Columbia is returning this June for two sessions. Session 1 runs from June 4-8, and Session 2 runs from June 11-15.
· This overnight camp is for Missouri high school rising seniors (current juniors) who are interested in a career in medicine.
· Students will attend lectures and will participate in Patient Based Learning (PBL) curriculum used by active Mizzou medical students.
· Time will be spent in hands-on clinical experiences, simulation and anatomy centers, and social events in the evenings.
· The cost for this camp is $650 which includes all the camp fees, lodging, camp deposit of $50 and meals.
