From the Office of Mrs. Kennedy
Be your best.
Do your best.
Grow even better.
This week we are celebrating our GPS Paraeducators. We appreciate our paraeducators daily, but we are making a special effort to celebrate them this week. Our schools would not be able to function without the support and dedication of our paraeducators.
Our paraeducators support our students, our staff, and our school community. They work hard to give their best every day. Our paraeducators care very much for our students and their success.
Please shout out to our paraeducators today and every day!

Spring is a busy time for our students and teachers. Not only are we planning for class field trips and end-of-the-year projects, we also have our state-mandated and district testing happening this time of the year. Parents play a crucial role in helping their children do their best on these tests. Having a positive attitude and encouraging your child to work hard is critical for students to take the tests seriously and put in the required effort. Other helpful things parents can do are to make sure their child gets a good night's sleep and plenty of rest. A good breakfast is also beneficial in fueling their brain and helping them have the energy and brain power they need.
If your child struggles with test anxiety, work with them on practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and a focus on positive thoughts. Have a conversation with them about taking their time and reading through the questions thoroughly. These tests are not timed. Students are given adequate time to complete these assessments as long as they are productive and working.
Our spring test schedule is as follows:

Did you Know?
Many of our students have created many memories at the splash pad. Now, it this one way our students can give back to their community.
From the Desk of Mr. Swanson
One question on my mind lately while watching world events unfold is, “How can others stand by and let this happen?” This led me to think of our own communities and schools. How often do we as individuals see something which we recognize as inappropriate, yet we say nothing? If we took the time to examine our day-to-day interactions, we’d be surprised by the number of opportunities neglected to make a stand for change. Opportunities to champion the underdog in the face of adversity.
We use the term upstander here at Washington Middle School. I’m not sure that everyone has a firm grasp of what that term means. An upstander is someone who, when they see something wrong, stands up for what’s right. An upstander is someone who protects the innocent. An upstander is someone who supports those who are in the right even when the majority is moving in the opposite direction.
I want to put a challenge out there to all community members. Why not be an upstander? If you see something, then say something. If we want a community that we can be proud of, each and every one of us needs to hold one another accountable for behaviors, beliefs, and actions.
