Message from Mrs. Phelan
Greetings!
Another exciting week of World Cup Soccer! Our students have been wearing their team colors and shirt to school to display their pride. It's been really touching to see their eyes light up as they tell you how their home country has played. We continue to highlight the ups and downs in the morning announcements. Team Brazil is still going strong with a big match tomorrow against South Korea. It was disappointing to see Team USA lose to the Netherlands yesterday. But how cool to have gotten this far. We'll have to see what comes next!
This week we will host the Watertown's Admin team will visit Lowell on Tuesday to conduct learning walks. Thursday, Me and Qi, will host Cookies with the Principal and AP. We will also use this opportunity to introduce the book Ouch! Moments to our students. The book was selected by our Caregivers Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Council at last months district wide DIB meeting. Dr. Henry has graciously supported the purchase of a copy for each classroom teacher and SEL staff member. The book helps facilitate conversations about hurtful words and their impact on others.
Friday is retake picture day for all of those who might have missed the first picture day or want to take advantage of a redo.
With a grateful heart,
Mrs. Phelan

Student Attendance Notification
Attendance is an essential component of a student’s academic success. It also creates a foundation for healthy social and emotional wellbeing. Excessive absences can have a significant impact on a child’s learning and development. And often, the number of days that students are absent can accumulate quickly without families realizing how many days have been missed. To keep families better informed, the school will email letters notifying parents/guardians when their children have missed 5 or more days of classes. If the absences exceed 10 days, the school will invite families to meet to discuss how to improve students’ attendance.
Please note that students who are absent for 10% (regardless of whether the they are excused or unexcused) of the school year are considered chronically absent according to the state of Massachusetts. Students who are chronically absent are less likely to meet grade-level standards.
Getting Ready for Winter
Here at the Lowell we love our time outdoors even when it's cold. We will miss our days sledding on the Lowell hill at recess this winter. .
Unless it's pouring rain or the windchill factor gets near zero we take students outside for recess. Please begin sending your child to school with a hat, gloves or mittens, scarf, snow boots, a heavy coat and snow pants. Students typically bring an additional bag to school with all their winter gear. Keeping a separate bags sometimes helps them and you to organize the gear into one space.
If you are find your child is in need of any winter clothing please contact our school nurse or guidance counselor. We want to make sure you have what you need this winter to stay warm.
Sometimes we need to call indoor recess. This decision is made by the three elementary nurses. We do our best to calibrate indoor recess across all three elementary schools.

i -Ready Diagnostic
Kindergarten students are preparing to take the i-Ready Diagnostic. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly more complex questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones.
Our students will begin taking the i-Ready Diagnostic according to the schedule posted below.
i-Ready Diagnostic Schedule
Kindergarten students will take the i-Ready Diagnostic for the first time beginning on the week of December 12 (reading) and the week of December 19 (math).
i-Ready Diagnostic for grades 1-5:
Week of - 12/12(reading)
Week of - 12/19 (math)
What can I do to help?
To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:
· Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
· Try your best on each question and try not to rush.
· Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is
expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.
· Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your child’s learning! You can also learn more about i-Ready by visiting i-ReadyCentral.com/FamilyCenter.
