Mill Valley Weekly
October 5th, 2023
Hello Mill Valley Families,
This week we kicked off our first ever all school One Book, One School program! With the support of the PTO, every student received a copy of the book A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold.
The purpose of this program is to:
foster a school community by all reading the same book so that we can have conversations and sharing of ideas between any MV student or adult.
create an awareness and connection of reading at home.
We hope that you are enjoying reading chapters with your students at home or listening to an MV staff member read each chapter of the book (attached Here).
Here are some questions to talk about:
Retell the chapter you just read. Include character names, setting and important events in order.
Talk about the main characters. Describe what they are like and how they are feeling.
How do Bat’s relationships with the other characters in the book change as you read?
On the daily morning announcements, there are trivia questions read. Every student in the school has the opportunity to answer the question about the book for a chance to win a prize!
Sincerely,
Allyce Harris, Principal
Julie Hetzel, Associate Principal

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Support)
Last month with our buddy classes, students read the book “What If Everybody Did That?” (click here to listen to the story). They then discussed scenarios of situations that could happen at school if everyone did things (i.e. if everyone threw their garbage on the floor).

Monthly Attendance Updates
Once a month, you will receive an email from Infinite Campus detailing your student’s attendance history. All families will be receiving this email, even if your child has not been absent from school.
This email is meant to be a communication between school and home. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Deanna Nowicki, School Social Worker at deanna.nowicki@muskegonorway.org or 262-422-1131.
Good attendance habits in the early grades are strong predictors for future success in high school and beyond.
Curriculum Update
To begin the year, the Teaching and Learning Department has been updating the School Board and various stakeholder groups regarding the impact of Wisconsin Act 20. The new law has a focus on science-based early literacy instruction. An overview of Act 20 can be found on the Teaching and Learning website. As outlined in the presentation, the District has begun the review process to evaluate elementary English Language Arts (ELA) resources.
At this point in the review process, there is a team of staff studying various resources to learn what tools will best help our students to acquire science-based early literacy skills. Curriculum lead teachers are examining resources and students may be given the opportunity to experience a few lessons or components as we are evaluating. The District is not planning to run a full pilot at this time. If you have questions regarding the resource review and recommendation process, please plan to attend an upcoming meeting. The meeting dates and times are listed below;
Bay Lane Elementary - November 14th 5:30-6:00 Library
Lakeview Elementary - November 7th 5:30-6:00 Library
Mill Valley Elementary - November 8th 5:30-6:00 Library
