COLORADO TIMBERLINE ACADEMY IS A NON-TRADITIONAL COLLEGE PREPARATORY, CO-ED, SECONDARY BOARDING/DAY SCHOOL DEDICATED TO CHANGING THE LIVES OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTIES IN A PREVIOUS HIGH SCHOOL SETTING. OUR MISSION IS TO PREPARE STUDENTS ACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY FOR THE CHALLENGES THEY FACE UPON GRADUATION. THROUGH OUR DIVERSE CURRICULUM AND OUTDOOR PROGRAMS, WE FOSTER FREEDOM WITH RESPONSIBILITY, CREATIVITY, AND RESPECT FOR SELF, EACH OTHER, AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
Colorado Timberline Academy offers a close-knit community with educational and outdoor-oriented excellence:

Interested Teachers
CTA is located on 53 acres, 14 miles north of Durango and 14 miles south of Purgatory on the Animas River. We enjoy a beautiful location that supports an excellent learning environment and exploration of the outdoors. Our campus comprises the "Lodge," a large cabin that is our main building, the "Rainbow Building" with additional learning spaces, a pottery studio, and over 20 residential cabins where our staff and students live.
Our teachers enjoy a lot of autonomy in the classroom and opportunities to lead the school the outside the classroom. They have two academic classes daily with an average of 8 students and guide an outdoor pursuit three days a week. Teachers have the occasional night duty during the week and 4-5 weekend duties throughout the year.
Three times during the year, we have our trips. School starts with "Wakan", a week-long backpacking trip in the Weminuche Wilderness, a fall trip in October to the deserts of the Southwest, and a spring trip. Fall and Spring Trips might include kayaking, climbing, fishing, a cultural tour, or college visits. The groups typically consist of 2 staff members and 5 - 8 students.
We offer a salary, health, room and board, a season ski pass, and a 401K. We accept experience and/or aptitude in lieu of teaching certifications. Total compensation, including benefits and room and board, starts at $56,000.
Requirements
- Position is residential and requires living on campus
- Applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in the subject area

Preferences
- Experience in any of the following: kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fly fishing, and/or other outdoor pursuits.

Interested Dorm Parents
Primary Purpose: Provide teacher support with weekend activities and weekend duties, including campus rounds, meal duties, and transportation to and from off-campus activities. Be on call for appointments/emergencies on on-duty days during the week. Live in a dorm with freshmen/sophomores. We have boys' and girls' dorms.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license/clean driving record.
- Experience with high school-aged children preferred.
- Ability to lead student activities.
- Ability to develop safe/trusting relationships with students/staff.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to take constructive criticism.
- Ability to be a mentor/role model for students.
- Ability to communicate with/support co-workers.
- Personal cell-phone required.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Be available to work every Friday-Sunday, as well as two days during the week.
2. Be on duty two days during the week and on call throughout those days.
3. Be willing to help with meal duties on assigned work days.
4. Be willing to help with campus rounds on assigned work days.
5. Provide transportation to town on Fridays.
6. Provide airport transportation on student travel days/as needed on on-duty days.
7. Provide transportation for weekend activities.
8. Maintain safe/positive household environment.
9. Serve as a positive role model for students and support the mission at CTA.
10. Manage student behavior in accordance with CTA student handbook.
11. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students/ equipment /materials /technology, and facilities.
12. Stay informed of/comply with all school regulations and policies.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to think clearly in stressful/difficult situations. Ability to remain “the adult in the room.” Ability to walk around campus in poor weather conditions. An extended amount of walking is required. Ability to work prolonged and irregular hours if needed.
