Mustang Memo December
Nixon-Smiley Middle School
Message from the Principal
NSMS Family,
Where did the time go? It is hard to believe we will finish the first semester in a couple of
weeks. As we conclude 2022 and take time to reflect and celebrate the holidays, I hope that we continue our actions of gratitude and thankfulness for one another. Remember, we continue to work on treating people right and doing the right thing and there is no better time to continue that message than during this season of gratitude.
Progress reports will go out on December 6th. Final grades for the semester will be
submitted on December 16th. We are encouraging students to check their grades online and check-in with their teachers to ensure they do not have any missing work. Please remember that the library is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 7:00. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get help with missing assignments before the semester’s end.
Research shows that students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This is the reason that we stress the importance of attendance for your child. We understand there will be times your child is sick but please help ensure they are here when they are well. We have added an automated calling system that will call you if your child is out for any part of the day. Remember, at middle school, we take attendance each period and when a student comes in late or leaves early they are counted absent for those periods. Each period's attendance will be taken into consideration for your child to pass on to the next grade level.
We have had a good year so far, and I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year!
Brittany Rogers

UIL
UIL is an academic competition that NSMS students participate in against students from other schools in our UIL district. These activities are designed to motivate students, encourage students and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. Students are challenged to think critically, exhibiting much more than knowledge and comprehension. UIL also Improves student achievement and provides practical training for the future. Our UIL teams have been created and students have been working hard practicing skills for the team they have joined. We will have our competition in January.
