Four Exceptional ALA Scholars Embark on a Journey of Opportunity
Maya Horn, Aireal Sweet, Jada Jones, and Arielle Williams: ALA Scholars Making a Difference
Four exceptional scholars from the Accelerated Learning Academy (ALA) have been chosen for two incredible opportunities that showcase their dedication to making a difference. Maya Horn, Aireal Sweet, Jada Jones, and Arielle Williams are outstanding scholars and passionate advocates for positive change.
In a heartwarming collaboration between Lakota-Flint ALA Community Outreach and Kettering University, a beacon of hope shines bright on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. This partnership is dedicated to creating sustainable programs that empower the Lakota people, promoting self-sufficiency, economic development, and educational opportunities while respecting their unique history and culture.
The heart of this mission lies with the Oglala Lakota tribe, who have a remarkable history and culture deeply intertwined with the land they call home. Pine Ridge Reservation, situated in South Dakota, is of historical significance, but it has also faced immense challenges, from economic disparities to limited access to educational resources.
The Lakota-Flint ALA Community Outreach and Kettering University recognize the strength, resilience, and untapped potential within the Oglala Lakota tribe. Their collaborative efforts are designed to uplift this community and support their journey towards happier, healthier lives grounded in their unique heritage.
With their unwavering commitment to education and community service, these young scholars embody the spirit of ALA's mission. They are not content with excelling academically; they are determined to use their knowledge and skills to create a brighter future for those in need.
Maya and Ariel, in particular, recently gained national recognition for their involvement in an eye-opening ABC News feature titled "School Lead Testing." The report, anchored by Deborah Roberts, shed light on a pressing issue affecting schools across the United States—lead contamination in school water supplies.
The investigative report highlighted that lead contamination is widespread in the United States, with many schools grappling with lead issues that can enter the water through pipes or plumbing fixtures containing lead. Shockingly, no federal law requires testing for lead in schools that receive water from public water systems, and state regulations for schools vary, with a majority not mandating such tests.
Maya and Ariel's appearance in the ABC News feature showcased their commitment to creating awareness about lead contamination in school water supplies. Their involvement in this national spotlight reflects their determination to make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
The report featured Dr. Laura Sullivan, PhD, a professor of mechanical engineering at Kettering University in Flint, who has been a key player in addressing Flint's water issues from the beginning. Professor Sullivan is the point of contact with Flint Community Schools for the hydration station monitoring effort. Additionally, Dr. Nancy Love, PhD, the JoAnn Silverstein Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Engineering, leads a team conducting tests at Flint sites, working tirelessly to ensure water safety in the community.
The ABC News report highlights the alarming reality of lead contamination in public school drinking water across the United States. Some students face limited access to safe water sources, and the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety of school water supplies is evident. Advocates are pushing for a proactive approach to address this issue, such as installing lead-removing filters at school drinking and cooking water outlets. This approach has been successfully implemented in Flint, Michigan, at Flint Community Schools, where lead-contaminated water has been a significant concern.
Maya Horn, Aireal Sweet, Jada Jones, and Arielle Williams shine brightly as they use their education and voice to make a difference. Their involvement in the Lakota-Flint ALA Community Outreach and the ABC News feature underscores that these ALA scholars are inspiring role models, reminding us of the positive change that passionate individuals can bring to their communities and beyond.
