District Updates for the Month of July, 2023
17 day Notice!
The dog days of summer are upon us.....it's almost GO TIME! Too soon? Well, you've got a good month left before school starts. We're so looking forward to welcoming back students!
Included it this brief update are reminders on registration, programming, and other district activities during July!
Go Wildcats!
Mr. Fleenor
P.S. Why do they call it the dog days of summer?
What does 'dog days of summer' really mean? When Sirius would appear in the sky just before the sun, near the end of July, that marked the beginning of the very hottest days of the year. The Romans referred to this period as "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star," which was eventually translated as just "dog days."

FREE Meals for All Students!
For the upcoming 2023-24 school year, Michigan has authorized free meals for all students as
part of the Michigan School Meals program! This means students 4 yrs. old and above, at
public schools will have the opportunity to enjoy breakfast and lunch at no cost throughout the
academic year.
Michigan School Meals offer a great opportunity for everyone to eat together in the cafeteria
and hopefully make it easier for students and families to confidently check breakfast and lunch
off their list. We’re excited to serve even more students in the Mattawan community this year,
helping to fuel busy days with favorite menu items and a variety of delicious new recipes!
It is important to note that families should still complete the 23-24 School Meals and Summer
EBT application, which helps ensure ongoing state funding and can qualify your child’s school
or community for other special programs like free summer meals. Parents or guardians can
submit applications online at https://mattawan.familyportal.cloud/ or in person at your
child’s school office, or click on the file below.

Marching Band at Servian Leadership Camp, 2023!
We are very excited that so many of our future and current section leaders, and our full drum major team are attending Serviam Leadership Camp at WMU this week! They have the best team of instructors and motivators led by our terrific friend and colleague, Dr. David Montgomery!
What is Serviam?
We are a summer student leadership camp with options of a 3-day or 4-day experience.
SLA is designed for all high school marching band students who have a desire to become more effective as a leader. Topics explored will be of benefit to all students, not just those who already have leadership positions in their band.
However, students who do have leadership roles will find the Academy especially meaningful in preparing them to succeed in their band and beyond. (credit: https://serviamleadership.com/about/)
Teamwork for Learning
Our football program is not just about hitting the field, but also about making a difference in our community! Our players were found at summer learning camps taking the time to help out at our elementary classrooms for some fun-filled summer learning sessions!
Thanks for giving back to the community and making a positive impact on these young learners' lives. It's all about teamwork, both on and off the field!

Facilitites
Last year, the Board of Education approved the expenditure of roughly $300,000 out of remaining bond contingency funds from the construction of the EES/LES

Get involved today!
MPEF exists to bridge the gap between the funding MCS receives from the state and the funding necessary to provide quality educational experiences to all students across the five buildings in our district. If you feel inspired to join us in enhancing education at Mattawan, you can find out more about how to get involved at www.mpef.org.
