FYI from your TST: All Admin/teachers and assistants: Your laptops and desktops must be upgraded to Windows 10 by July 30. All data stored on the laptop/desktops will be lost, so make sure to back everything up (H drive, flash drive, or teacher folder on L) or it will be gone forever with no chance of recovery. If you want to take your laptop home over the summer I will need to upgrade it before you leave. I am not going to start this until after SOL are completed. Please make sure you take time and move anything you have stored on your desktop to a safe location.

I Make A Difference
Thank you so much Carla for the kind words last week. I would like to pass this award to someone who is always willing to help. Whether it's modifying a lesson or co-teaching a lesson, she is always there when you need it. You can always see her with a smile on her face, even when it has been a long day. I can always count on her if I have a problem and I have witnessed her willingness to help others, not to mention she always has chocolate when you need it. She is a hard worker and spends long hours on IEPs in order to make sure every student has what they need. I am excited to pass the award onto Sue Bagwell. Words cannot express how much 5th grade loves you!

Academic Engagement in the Homestretch
You’ve made it to the last few months of the academic year! From spring fever to state testing, there are lots of reasons why students might need a nudge to stay engaged in academics around this time of year. Here are some tips that can help!
- Make test prep fun. Teaching to standardized tests and drilling students on content may not be what you’d prefer to do with your classroom time. But test prep can be more enjoyable for everyone if you make a game out of it. Try quizzing students with a Jeopardy-style trivia game (giving them the topics to study the previous day).
- Consider your own mindset and language. If you talk about content as something to “get through so we can do something fun later,” students will pick up on your feelings and take on the same attitude. Try using envisioning language to get them (and yourself!) excited. For example, instead of simply telling students to “turn to page 62,” tell them that they’re about to discover the secrets of the solar system, or that they’re going to explore how the world changed because of the Industrial Revolution. Remember, you can make any topic seem fun with the right mindset.
- Plan for academic engagement from the start. Rather than thinking about movement, collaboration, and energizers as add-ons to your already full school day, try building your lesson plans with these things in mind. Remember, you’ll be saving time in the long run if you help students get energized and ready to learn! Also, keep in mind your students’ developmental stages and personalities when planning activities. At their current stage, do they need breaks more often to rest? Are they especially interested in debating different ideas? Is this a group that likes wordplay and humor? Use what you know about your students to plan lessons that will excite them and maximize their learning.

2017-2018 Mandatory Curriculum webinars
The purpose of this memo is to share information regarding one of the mandatory division-wide Professional Learning Program (PLP) classes required for all elementary school teachers. The Department of Teaching and Learning has developed mandatory curriculum webinars that will provide information about updates to the elementary curriculum as it pertains to each content area, grade level and transformational learning. The webinars are designed to be viewed individually or as a grade level team and will include a component during the viewing time to pause and reflect. Following the webinar, teachers will have an opportunity to reflect on their personal transformational learning through the lens of the curriculum. This reflection will serve as documentation for the completion of the course.
The mandatory curriculum webinars will be uploaded to the SharePoint site and will be available beginning August 14.
