Whole school Assembly - hosted by Kindy
Dear Parents
Welcome back to Term 3 at Jurien Bay District High School, the final full term of school for our Year 12 students. This term will be highlighted by school and interschool Athletic Carnivals, Interschool Cross Country and school wide activities during August to celebrate Literacy and Numeracy Week, Year 6 Camp to Perth and end with Secondary Country Week Sport in Perth.
This term we have welcomed Ms Jaclyn Greer to the primary teaching staff. Ms Greer will be teaching Science across the primary and supporting classes with small group work in
English and Maths. We also welcome Mrs Tania Bradbury back to Jurien Bay DHS as our Year 3/4 teacher.
Every 2 years we complete a survey of the parents and care givers of students at our school. This survey helps us to identify what you think we are doing well and areas in which we can work to improve. The survey is anonymous. The results will be shared via our newsletter, with our staff, School Board and in the Annual Report. The survey is available on line by clicking the following link
https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/HWHF7VKa or if you would prefer a paper copy these can be collected and returned to the school office. The survey is open until 17 August.
Term 2 ended with a whole school assembly with awards to students who had tried that bit harder at school and reports being sent home for all students. Every day we strive to improve academic results and hope that all families took time over the break to review reports, celebrate success and plan for improvement. We will get NAPLAN results back this term and will analyse these to ensure our teaching focuses on the areas of greatest need. We expect the results will be back mid to late August.
In Week 2 we had a “Flash” Book Fair in the library. Thank you to Mrs Buitenhuis for organising the Book Fair and presenting such a wonderful collection of books.
Year 10-12 students have the second round of OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) commencing next week, students aim to pass these tests to ensure they can achieve the best final results in Year 12.
The new Yued Nature Playground is proving very popular with all students. The many creative ways in which students are playing is a credit to their imagination and cooperative skills.
The secondary staff and students have reviewed Behaviour Education and Management in the high school with a focus on maintaining standards. Students are aware of what is required to maintain “Good Standing”. The start to the term has been positive and I look forward to seeing all students display our values of respect, responsibility and commitment every day at school.
If parents have any queries regarding their child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the class or subject teacher to arrange a suitable time to meet.

Trust
Trust is much more important than technology. You can install parental controls, or do every single thing that is recommended at any cybersafety talk that you have ever attended....but, there is still a chance that problems will arise.
To keep children safe online, we need to continuously educate them by talking to them often. Some topics to discuss regularly are:
1. How to keep their personal information private.
2. Don't talk to strangers online and never meet up with anyone they have met online.
3. Make sure they speak to you or another trusted adult if something goes wrong.
4. What to do if they are being cyberbullied and to speak up if they see one of their friends being cyberbullied. Making sure they know to speak up rather than retaliate is the big one.
5. As they get older, talk to them about the law and how it may affect them particularly with topics such as sexting.
Be proactive, not reactive. Set healthy boundaries like banning devices from the bedroom or having a curfew on them.
My personal view is that a common mistake is just saying "no" without explaining why. That "why" is crucial because it can often mean the difference between a young person listening to you instead of completely tuning out. I also find asking them to be responsible for what their younger siblings are doing online empowers them. Rather than lecturing them on why they should not do something online, teach through them and ask them to make sure that their younger siblings aren't not doing certain things online, that way they are learning on the way through and learning to be responsible for others.
Trust matters, you may not see it making an immediate difference but it will. You will see it when a child starts asking for your opinion or advice on issues that have come up for them online.
An example conversation starter:
1. Have you heard about..........(e.g. the game Fortnite)
Say you heard about it in the news and that you would like to know more about what makes it so appealing? Be engaged and interested. Give your child the opportunity to talk. Then ask them what they think the risks might be to their younger siblings or cousins? Then ask them to check for you if their younger siblings/ cousins aren't at risk, this empowers them.
Always make sure you end the conversation by letting them know that they can always talk to you, and the sooner they do, the easier an issue may be fixed.
Dear Parents & Caregivers
Welcome back to school for Semester 2 – I trust everyone had an enjoyable break! In what promises to be a busy term, I look forward to celebrating the success of our students at upcoming carnivals and enjoying some of our culminating events, such as the School Ball in Week 8 of the term.
At the end of last term we commenced the roll out of 1-to-1 iPads for our Year 7 cohort. Students access their personalised iPad from the lockable charging station during Form period every morning and have it available for all lessons during the school day for teaching and learning activities. The students then return their iPad to the charging cabinets at the end of the school day. This initiative ensures that our students have access to the latest digital technologies to enhance their learning and in conjunction with our computer labs and laptops increases familiarisation with a variety of platforms. Year 7 students who have personal iPads at home, who prefer to use their own should contact Miss Dix to discuss the process.
A new Behaviour Management process has been commenced at the start of this term. The new process aims to provide a consistent and fair process that is clearly understood by our staff and students. The process focuses on developing awareness of, and adherence with, our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Commitment and setting high standards for the behaviour of our students.
In conjunction with the new Behaviour Management process, we wish to celebrate the vast majority of our students who uphold exemplary stands of behaviour throughout our school community. Near the conclusion of each term, we will hold an End of Term Reward day. To be eligible to participate in the End of Term Reward students are required to maintain their “Good Standing”. Our End of Term Reward for Term 3 will be held on the Thursday of Week 9, with the activities, at this stage still a secret, sure to provide an enjoyable and rewarding day for those students who are eligible.
Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations to Lailah Woodford who has been selected to participate in the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure, following a successful application with the support of the Shire of Dandaragan. Having previous experience with students who have participated I am sure Lailah will benefit immensely from the opportunity and have an experience she will remember forever.

Deputy Principal - Secondary
Since our first day of school we have been counting each day to reach our target of 100 days of school. In order to celebrate our 100th day we decided to dress up as what we imagined a 100 year old person would look like. Our day was spent with students engaging collaboratively in literacy and numeracy activities focus on 100.
Pre Primary and Year 2 classes
Mavis - a genuine heroine
Last Thursday, Caroline Crow Salmon and her daughter Mica visited the Year 7 and 9 English classes about Caroline's newly published novel, Mavis - a Genuine Heroine.
Caroline wrote the novel for her daughters, as she wanted to create a unique female hero that they could look up to. Mica was integral in the editing process and also the cover design of the book, which features a real image of the sky above Jurien Bay. The English classes discussed novel writing and publishing, and also completed some creative writing exercises. Caroline and Mica kindly donated a copy of the novel, which was raffled to lucky Abbie Lewis (Year 7).
Thanks Caroline and Mica for your time and the inspiration you have provided the Year 7 and 9 English students.

Kindy enrolments for 2019 are now open at our school.
If you have a child who turns 4 before 30 June 2019 then they are eligible to enrol.
Enrolment in to Kindergarten provides a fabulous start to your child’s education. It will teach social skills, early literacy and numeracy and allow children to learn the routines of a school, setting the foundation for future success.
It is important to enrol before Friday 10 August as it will allow the school to ensure staffing and support are in place before the new school year begins.
For an Application of Enrolment form, please click on this link https://goo.gl/bNJkca, or call into the office to collect. Alternatively, email Jurien.DHS@education.wa.edu.au or phone 9652 1014 with any questions.
We look forward to the new children joining our school in 2019.
Pyjama day
The Year 6 camp fundraiser last term was a huge success! It was wonderful to see so many students support us and come in their Pyjamas to school! We all had a warm and cosy day in lessons. In total we raised an amazing $166. Well done everyone and thank you so much for your support!
Leewin Ocean Adventure
The successful recipient for the 2018 Leeuwin Scholarship is Year 11 student Lailah Woodford.
Congratulations Lailah on your successful application. We hope your upcoming adventure is all that you dream it to be.
school sporting events
Winter Carnival
At the end of last term students from years 3 – 6 represented Jurien Bay District High School at the Winter Carnival in Leeman. We had two Netball teams and two Soccer teams that put up a stellar performance both with their physical attributes and their sportsmanship. The ‘Red’ Netball team won the overall competition with our other three teams faring well on the final ladder as well. Tyson Nunn, Andie Rouse, Regan Harris, Jared Gardner, Rorie Rackemann and Annabell Green umpired all day for the competition and were fabulous. These Secondary students showed patience, confidence and support to our juniors and should be proud of themselves. A big thank you to the parents that supported and to Allison Donovan for umpiring. It was a great day that the Jurien school and community should be proud of…we have awesome little superstars here!! Click on the link for results and photos from the day. https://goo.gl/kFcuGK

Interschool Cross Country at Eneabba, July 27
On Friday 43 of our students participated in the Interschool Cross Country held in Eneabba. With 18 schools and 364 competitors at the event the challenge was set. The weather was more suited to ducks than a running race, however our students took it in their stride and produced some amazing results. The 13 year old girls took out the trifecta and many students finished in the top 10. Overall Jurien came 5th in the Primary events and WON the overall shield for Secondary! Congratulations to the competitors on a fantastic effort. Thanks to the parents who braved the weather and came to support the kids, it was great to see you there.

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators.
jurien bay emergency service cadet corps
This semester we will begin the next phase in our development of the Jurien Bay ESCC program.
Our first goal was to increase the participation through creating an engaging and meaningful program and rewards system, which we have succeeded in with regular voluntary participation exceeding 35 students.
Our second goal was to raise the awareness and prestige of the cadets program. We have successfully achieved this through the introduction of a training uniform which proudly identifies students as cadets, by introducing the community service component and opportunities, by creating very specific end of year rewards and awards and by raising the profile of the unit through various activities where they represented ESCC cadets from across the state. We believe success in this goal is evident through the hundreds of hours of community service our cadets have completed so far this year, and the manner in which all cadets carry themselves with pride in their uniforms on a Thursday.
Our third goal was to build in a structure to the unit to give cadets leadership opportunities and refine the quality of our cadets. We now have a solid model for the unit with 4 different sections, each actively and independently lead by one of our most competent cadets. Further success in this goal came with our unit being awarded top ESCC unit in the state for 2017.
Now we aim to build in an element of rigor and a structure to promotions and greatly develop the values of responsibility and commitment within our cadet unit.
In order to be promoted, cadets will need to fullfil certain designated criteria and complete a variety of assessments which will give the cadets a clear goal to achieve and ensure commendation for those who have taken the initiative to aim for promotion.
Furthermore, every cadet will be presented with a handbook in which they will log their training, community service and completion of assessments towards promotion. Cadets will need to be responsible for this log book as we will not be regularly distributing replacements. In order to earn promotion they will need to keep these log books up to date and safe.
Through these two initiatives we aim to develop the cadets ability to look after and manage a log book. This is a stepping stone towards the organisational skills they will need in the future and will promote goal setting through clearly defined expectations in order to achieve a promotion.
