WAVM Chapter 74 Students Earn Student Production Awards
Congratulations to Sean Leahy and Siobhann Hickey for being honored with Student Production Awards by the Boston/New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The competition included all forms of video and multi-media productions in many categories, and students from all over New England entered their work. Sean took home the Glass Pillar for the category of Multimedia Journalist and Siobhann took home the Glass Pillar in the category of Animation/Graphics/Special Effects. We are so proud of these young creators!
TEACHER TRIBUTE PROGRAM
Looking for a year and gift that makes a big difference? We invite you to consider the MEF teacher tribute program!
When you make a tax-deductible donation to MEF through the Teacher Tribute Program, MEF will send your child’s teacher (s) or any staff member (s) a letter and a magnet on your behalf thanking them for their dedication and exceptional teaching. (The amount of the donation will remain confidential.)
This year MEF funded 13 grants for staff and students including 8 senior project grants at Maynard High School. The grants include a district wide Media Literacy program, Restorative Justice training for staff, expansion of the very popular cooking advisory. We had an all-time high number of student grants awarded this year! MEF grant funded the DECA club expansion and participation in the DECA International Career Development conference as well as the creation of a mural by the National Honor Society. 8 senior project grants were awarded for Phone Free Friday Initiative (a favorite of Ms. Doktorov!), the creation of a MHS online newspaper, purchase of therapeutic equipment for student athletes, Art Therapy paint night, Jam Session at Sanctuary for Fowler and MHS music students, Vaping awareness campaign, and the creation of a Wiggle Walk at Green Meadow as well as the very popular Thinkery Room at the MHS library.
Deadline for Participation is Monday, June 12, 2023
Seniors Finish Strong with Senior Project Presentations
On May 19th, seniors presented to panel judges about their accomplishments in the Senior Project course this year. They did a fantastic job! Senior Project allows students to focus their year on a topic and field they are interested in. We are excited to share some exemplary Senior Projects:
Peyton Thompson
The Night Shift: Animated Short
Peyton is a talented artist and animator who will be pursuing her craft at Savannah College of Art and Design this fall. The final film link is first, and it's just as cool to watch the making of it in the second link!
Evan Moore and Dylan Peavoy
WAVM Vocational Cooperative Program with Till, Inc.
Evan Moore and Dylan Peavoy worked with Dafna Krouk-Gordon, founder of TILL, Inc. and Sue Moody of TILL, to begin a vocational program in filmmaking and broadcasting with TILL adults. TILL (Toward Independent Living and Learning) helps provide services for people with developmental disabilities and mental health needs. Dylan and Evan have been working with several TILL clients to help them make a film about the TILL Games--an annual athletic competition that will take place at the Reggie Lewis Center this summer.
Annie Konieczka
Recall of Verbal Miranda Rights Based on the Gender of the Speaker
Annie is a longtime member of the MHS Mock Trial Team and is interested in law. For her Senior Project, she worked with Franklin Pierce professor Jennie Brown on an experiment regarding understanding of the Miranda Rights when read by different gender voices. Their findings were submitted for publication in the Journal of Emerging Investigators and can be read in the above link.
Eliza Smethers
Public Health and Vaping Prevention
Eliza's Senior Project brought anti-vaping posters to our halls and bathrooms. She also organized assemblies for all students, bringing in speakers from i-Decide (Drug Education
Curriculum: Intervention, Diversion, and Education), a public health research organization that is working to prevent and reduce teen vaping.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
This school year, ALL STUDENTS can receive a free breakfast and lunch every day at school. However, if you think that your family might qualify, we strongly encourage parents/caregivers to complete the free and reduced lunch application. Qualifying for free and reduced lunch also qualifies students for reduced cost and/or fee waivers for various school related fees (bus fee, field trips, SAT test fees, AP test fees and college application fees). The online application is available here: https://www.nlappscloud.com (social security numbers and proof of permanent residency are NOT required).
