Principal's Update
April 17, 2020
Dear BHS students and families,
Next week we begin our remote learning sessions. Teachers have been preparing individualized, creative and meaningful lessons to finish out the school year strong. They have made contacts with families in regards to internet access and determined who was in need of alternate materials. They are ready! Are you?
On Monday, you will be receiving communication from your MATH teacher (if you have a Math class). They will explain to you how the rest of the semester will work and what can be expected. It is imperative that you as a student engage and participate in the learning. Students will only be receiving credit if they are engaged in the remote learning process. Otherwise, the full course or a portion of the course will be repeated next year. For this reason, it is VERY important for students to maintain communication with teachers.
On Tuesday, your ELA teachers will be communicating with you about the same things. Each teacher will deliver content and give an assignment that demonstrates learning. I can not stress this enough - PLEASE MAINTAIN COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR TEACHERS. If you don't understand a lesson, if you are having difficulty receiving the materials, if you need help, whatever the issue is, please make sure you communicate your needs to your teachers.
The same process will happen every day of the week. Wednesday is reserved for Science teachers to contact you, Thursday is for Social Studies and Friday is for Electives. Depending on your schedule you may be contacted by more than one teacher on a given day. I have left the Weekly Learning Plan from the last Principal's Update so that everyone has a clear understanding of the schedule Buchanan High School will follow.
If you are a student with an online course, a college course, or a CTE course, you must continue to complete those courses as normal. Make sure you are scheduling time in your week to complete them.
I want to be perfectly clear here, Buchanan High School will follow a Credit/Incomplete model for second semester for all grades 8-11. This means that no grades will be given to students, but students will have to continue learning remotely in order to earn credits for their courses. Students who choose to not engage, or are not able to engage in remote learning will earn an Incomplete for the semester and will be placed in the same class next year to recover those credits not earned.
If you requested paper copies, we have a filing cabinet under the awning in the front of the building on Chicago Street near the east side of the gym. There is a drawer at the bottom that teachers will place envelopes in for students who requested them starting on Monday. Those envelopes will have the students name and date it was placed in the cabinet. Any envelopes left in the cabinet at the end of the week will be mailed. When a student needs to return paper assignments, the top drawer has an opening for students to return the envelopes provided. Please date your return envelope of the day you submitted to the drop off.
If you need internet to submit work, we have provided WiFi for students in our parking lot. Please read the section below regarding that service.
As you can see, we have tried to think of everything, but undoubtedly we have missed something. If you need something that is not already provided, please reach out to your teachers to make that request. We thank you for your patience and understanding while we learn new things together.
As always, stay safe, stay healthy, stay positive, and stay BUCKSTRONG!
Sincerely,
Mrs. DeMaio

From Student Services:
If you have any questions about how to get in touch with your teachers or earn credit for your classes this semester, please don't hesitate to reach out. If you were working on a virtual class in our eLab, your class is still running and you should be working your way through that as though nothing has changed. For all Buchanan High School classes, it is important that you are active and engaged in your Google Classroom or coursework packets daily. We don't want to see you fall behind. As always, your counselors are here for you for any of your personal/social, educational, or career development needs. Mrs. Barlow is holding office hours Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 10-12 pm. She can be called or texted at 269-697-1601. Mr. Flowers is holding office hours from 12-3 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; and from 8:30-11:30 am on Tuesdays and Fridays. He can be called or texted at 269-697-1760.
