Shoultes families,

Time is flying by this year and as I am writing this message I am reflective of the many things we have done this year at Shoultes that are having a positive impact upon our students, staff and families.

First, you might not know this but our staff worked hard during the first several months of school to build a brand new master schedule for our school. This new schedule has been in place since the end of November and it has allowed a much more aligned approach to instruction across all grade levels.

Second, our new schedule helped us create a very intensive intervention program for our students served through the Multilingual Learning program, our Learning Assistance Program and special education. Put more simply, we have a process and system in place to provide additional support, above what students get from their core teacher, for more than one hundred students struggling with reading and more than sixty students who are struggling in math.

Third, I have always believed that the only way to find success is by creating genuine partnerships with the families of our students. We have recommitted to these partnerships with monthly community breakfasts for families, our recent Watch Dogs event (over 150 people participated) and a renewed emphasis upon building our volunteer program here at Shoultes.

Finally, you may or may not be familiar with iReady. It is part of our math curriculum here at Shoultes and it helps provide us with information about student progress in reading as well. As the principal I am responsible to make sure that we are seeing gains in all academic areas and this is one tool that I use to know how our students are doing. Our iReady assessments are given three times a year and we are just now wrapping up the second round. The gains we have made since we first gave the assessment at the beginning of the year are impressive. We still have a ways to go but I am proud of our progress and we are certainly on the right track.
