The World of Westwood Wolves

Westwood Elementary empowers all learners to grow in a safe and positive environment to launch a lifetime of learning.

We had a great week at Westwood! It was fun to see many of our Wolves out at Roller City Friday evening- as far as I know, no one ended up in the ER, so that's a win!

We have a free, fun family event coming up this Tuesday- Westwood Wonderland! We will have lots of different crafts and projects for kids to make, a performance by our honor choir, Christmas songs, and more! The event will be from 5-7, and there will be concessions available for sale.

Just a reminder that school will go through Tuesday, Dec. 20th this year. Our calendar is a bit different than usual due to Christmas falling on a Sunday, so we will go two days then start Christmas break on Wednesday, Dec. 21st. We have fun things planned those two days, so we don't want anyone to miss out! The calendar for the entire year is down towards the bottom of the newsletter each week so you'll always know in advance about breaks, etc.

We've had 3 classes spell "WEST"- they have had all students present and on time for at least 4 days. They will get extra party time in the gym!

We are having a couple of dress up days for some holiday fun- Monday is "Grinch Day" (wear something with the Grinch or green), Thursday is wear something that usually goes on a Christmas tree, Friday is wear flannel, Monday the 19th is pj day, and Tuesday the 20th is ugly Christmas sweater/clothes day.

We are looking forward to a great week at Westwood!

We are having some issues with arrival/dismissal. Students should not be dropped off in the middle of McRay or any surrounding streets- this is a huge safety concern. Also, when exiting the car line, it is right turn only (there are several signs, and the barrels are there). When a car sits at the exit waiting to turn left, it causes a major backup in the car line. One morning, the line could not move for several minutes due to one car not following the rules.

We appreciate all of you who follow procedures and rules set in place to keep everyone safe and make our car line run smoothly. Thank you!

My personal Crumby children have attended the last few summers, and they absolutely loved it. I would be happy to help answer any questions you have about camp or help you complete the application. You can apply after Dec. 15th, but those who apply before get 1st priority.

We are noticing a lot of our kids are late to school, checking out early, or not here at all- it makes us so sad for them to miss their learning and social time at school! In fact, as of Oct. 26th, we had 425 tardies and early checkouts just in October! The car line runs between 7:20-7:45; traffic is light until around 7:40. Every day, classes who are all here and on time (by 7:45) will earn a letter- when a class spells "West", there will be a fun surprise! We will continue on to spell "wood" and earn another surprise!

When students are late, they miss free breakfast (we always try to ask if they still need breakfast, but sometimes when it's busy in the office, it's hard to make sure). Also, every grade does some reading instruction first thing in the morning, so kids who aren't here on time miss that as well. Many students have a hard time coming in being ready to learn when they are upset or thrown off from being late. Please help us help our Wolves get off to the best start possible each day!

TEXTS: Click here to fill out a very short form that will add you to our text list. We use text messages to send out these weekly parent updates and reminders. We know texts are a convenient way to communicate for many of you, so please add yourself to the list by filling out this form. Multiple members of the same family can use it and each receive texts. If your phone number changes, you'll need to complete the form for your new number.

PHONE CALLS: We also send out phone calls through an automated system; you will receive these calls if your phone number is correct in Registration Gateway. If your number changes, you can update the information in Registration Gateway, or call the office to update.

SOCIAL MEDIA/WEBSITE: The weekly parent update and other announcements/stories are also posted on our school's Facebook page and website. We are working on activating our school's Instagram account also- we'll let you know when that's up and running.

PAPER NOTES: We also send out paper notes at times; most of these will be sent in folders that come home every Tuesday. Every now and then, we need to send information on other days, so it's a great practice to check the backpacks each afternoon/evening.

We don't want you to miss any information, so we put things out in lots of ways!

You should have received a letter over the summer as a reminder to update your child's information in registration gateway. The instructions for logging in were in the letter. If you have not done that, your student does not have an updated AUA (Acceptable Usage Agreement) form that we must have to assign a device (iPad or Chromebook) to your child. You'll need to update that ASAP. Here is the link if you need it. You can also come to the office to use one of our iPads if that would help.
