September Habit of the Month - Problem Solving
During the month of September, we highlight the Habit of Mind of Problem Solving. Being good problem solvers requires all of us to good thinkers. Here at Waikiki School, good thinking means being able to be good questioners.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of humans is our inclination and ability to find problems to solve. Effective problem solvers know how to ask questions to fill in the gaps between what they know and what they don't know. Effective questioners are inclined to ask a range of questions:
- What evidence do you have?
- How do you know that's true?
- How reliable is this data source?
Philosophy 4 children (p4c) is a perfect venue to practice our problem solving and questioning skills. In our p4c community circles, children are taught to use the "Good Thinkers Toolkit" commonly referred to WRAITEC. Here are some of the question stems used in p4c.
