We are back! I'd like to personally welcome back our returning Panther families and say hello to our new ones! I am so excited to have kicked off the 2019-20 school year...my fifth as proud principal of Corona High School. This has been a busy summer preparing for this year but it's always wonderful to have a great start, and this year we are doing so with just over 2,500 students.

With so many events and activities happening here, I understand that communication is key to keeping you informed. To this end, I urge you to check our website, download our Corona High School app, and follow our various social media accounts (including my Twitter, @CoronaPrincipal), and of course...read my Panther Prowl! The Panther Prowl serves as my weekly principal's newsletter and offer many updates around Corona High School along with special features from time to time such as exciting alumni news.

You can definitely mark your calendar now for our annual Back-to-School Night to be held on Wednesday, August 28 beginning at 5:00 pm with my Principal's Welcome in the Performing Arts Center, followed by a PTSA meeting at 5:30, and finally classroom visits at 6:00 pm. Don't miss this opportunity to meet your student's teachers and hear about some of the great things happening at Corona High School!

All of us here at Corona High School would like to wish each and every one of our families a fantastic school year and want you to know that if you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me, our teachers, any member of our administration staff, or other staff members. This year we really want to focus on two key aspects of our school: culture and academic rigor. Corona High School has been around since 1896 and that has provided us a rich tradition that no other school in our district can claim. We are the namesake of our city and our district (at least half) and that gives us great pride! With that, we want to ensure that we keep our culture at the forefront and continue promoting our Tradition of Excellence. Academically, we want to continue challenging our students to make them better critical thinkers and problem solvers. To do so, we must focus on finding new ways to increase the rigor in all classrooms. We would be failing our families if we do not challenge our students to think more critically and find creative ways to problem solve, regardless of the subject area. The 20/20 Vision graphic below will serve as a reminder to our staff and students that we have high expectations of all our students!

At the conclusion of the 2018-19 school year, we said good-bye to a few of our staff members; this year, we get to welcome new members to the Panther family. Please join me in welcoming the following Panthers who will be part of the newest support system for our students. (Order of pictures follows in the same order as their respective bios.)

• Vanessa Villalobos, Counselor, joins us from elementary counseling and just over 17 years of experience in CNUSD in various capacities. We are so happy to have her join our counseling staff and she's been all in helping out our students during this busy time of year.
• Lan Gomez, School Psychologist, comes from Eleanor Roosevelt High School and brings with her 18 years of school psych experience, with 15 of those years being served here in CNUSD. She's been a great fit to our team and has already made her positive presence known.
• Carlotta Maggi, Visual Arts teacher, has 20 years of teaching experience in CNUSD and comes to us from Santiago High School, where she built a successful Fashion & Design program. She joins a strong Visual Arts department and her experience as an artist is evident.
• Eva Perez, DLI/Spanish/History teacher, is a Corona graduate, Class of 2001, and we are so excited to have her coming back home to teach her roots. It was a competitive pool, but she was definitely the right fit for our Dual Language Immersion program and our school.
• Kayla Priddy, New York University teacher intern, is another Corona grad, Class of 2015! Kayla joins us as an NYU intern to complete her teaching credential and will be with us all year working alongside Mr. Trout in Special Ed. She recently graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and we are so happy to have her back where it all started.
• Alterraun Verner, NYU teacher intern, is a Los Angeles native and join us with a math degree from UCLA. After an 8-year career as a professional football player, Alterraun is excited to complete his credential at Corona High School and we are so happy to have him! He will be working alongside Mr. Enger in math.
  
• Ivy Do, NYU teacher intern, is an Orange County native and recent UC Irvine graduate with two degrees (English and Education Sciences). Ivy will be working with Mrs. Gressley in English Language Arts and so far she has been a great fit!
  

Our previous School Resource Officer (SRO Baxter) retired in June and we were fortunate enough to acquire Officer Renstrom as his replacement. For clarification, SROs are Corona Police Department officers, and not district employees. This is a partnership that the district has with CPD to help ensure the safety of our students. SROs serve three-year assignments and are housed in the school's administration office. Officer Renstrom has been with CPD since 2002 in several capacities and has served as a police officer since 2006. In addition to now being our SRO, he also leads the Police Explorers Program to expose the city's youth to various aspects of law enforcement as a potential career. He is married and has two children. He actually came on board unofficially the last three weeks or so of last school year, but is now officially our SRO. Welcome Officer Renstrom to Corona High School!

Our first production year will debut on November 7 in our Performing Arts Center. Attention Parents: IF your student is enrolled in Online Health, be aware that there will be two orientation meetings next week. The first opportunity will be Wednesday morning, August 21st at 8:00 am in F-7. The other opportunity will be Thursday, August 22nd at 2:50 in F-7. Please ensure that your student attends one of these sessions.

Also, if your student is interested in Online Health, but has not yet enrolled, please have him/her see his/her counselor ASAP. We still have a few spots available for this semester. S/he may also enroll for next semester. For more information, please email Mrs. Bogner (kbogner@cnusd.k12.ca.us) or see her in Room B-13.

Last year's big projects have now been completed: the boys and girls locker rooms, and our welding shop. Both our PE locker rooms have undergone a much-needed update and are now looking great! As the only school in the district with a welding program, the much anticipated modernizing of the shop has been absolutely amazing. With new welding machines, welding booths, and other industry standard equipment, our students will develop some highly desirable skills that will make them employable immediately following graduation. Three additional projects that began over the summer include the remodeling of our choir room and band room, and converting room C-2 into a digital photography with a full Mac lab and Canon cameras for each student. The choir and band rooms should be completed in just a matter of days, while the digital photography lab will require a bit more patience. Nevertheless, we are so excited to have these upgrade facilities to enhance our students' high school experience!

On Saturday, August 17 we will be hosting a Women's Fair sponsored by Mujeres Con Destino (Women with Destiny). Mom's will have an opportunity to take advantage of free services in our main gym (see flyer below for more details). See you here from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Below are some pictures from our Class of 2019 Commencement Ceremony that were included in the final Panther Prowl of the 2018-19 school year. I decided to keep them here as a reminder of what we are striving for every year. Class of 20/20, this is for you!

Got ASB? Students with ASB cards gain access to athletic events for free as well as discounts to dances and other school activities. Additionally, we hold "Got ASB?" events throughout the year where ASB card holders get free items such as Panther gear, snacks, ice cream, and other goodies. Have your student visit the Student Store to purchase his/her ASB card.

You might recall that last school year the CNUSD Board of Education approved the renaming of our football stadium after Jess Hill, Corona graduate of the Class of 1925, and Corona Hall of Fame inductee in 1979. Our ceremony will take place before our home football game against Riverside Poly on August 30 at 6:00 pm along with a special halftime presentation. Don't miss out on this event!

Mark your calendars now for our first-ever districtwide College and Career Fair to be held at Santiago High School on October 16, 2019. This will be a collaborative effort of all high schools in CNUSD to promote college and career preparedness.

Given our history, Corona High School is very fortunate to have multiple generations that can call themselves Panthers. At many parent events I often ask for a show of hands of those that have graduated from Corona and sure enough, there are always several hands that go up.
