Can Your Child Attend School? (Sick Day Policy)
When your child is sick, it is important to know when they should stay home from school. This helps them recover faster, and prevents the spread of illness within our schools. Please refer to the following guidelines when considering whether or not your child should attend school.
In general, your child should NOT attend school if they have any of the following symptoms:
Fever of 100.4 ℉ or greater
Vomiting/diarrhea
Severe coughing/difficulty breathing
Drainage from the eye(s)
New rash
Contagious diseases such as COVID-19, Chicken pox, Flu, Pink eye, Active head lice/scabies, Impetigo, Strep throat, Measles, Whooping cough, etc. Please consult your primary care physician regarding school attendance for contagious diseases.
If you plan to keep your child home from school due to illness, please contact the school’s front office to notify them of the absence. If your student is seen by a doctor, please bring the doctor’s note to the office upon return to school.
When Might Your Child Be Sent Home Sick by the School Nurse?
If students arrive at school sick or become sick during the school day, a parent/guardian will be contacted by the school nurse to pick them up. Please note that the school nurse CANNOT administer medication to a child without a signed medication policy and a doctor’s order (this includes over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol/ibuprofen, Benadryl, etc.)
School nurses will refer to the above listed guidelines, as well as their own clinical judgment, when determining if a child should be sent home sick from school.
When Can Your Child RETURN to School After Illness?
In general, your child should return to school after being sick when they are:
Fever-free WITHOUT medication for 24 hours
Improvement in symptoms WITHOUT medication for 24 hours
Cleared by their primary care physician (for contagious diseases)
Thank you for helping Springdale Public Schools keep our students healthy!
