Weekly Update ~ October 4, 2021
News from Mrs. B & Mr. Murray
Social Emotional Needs
October is here! And within this month we have much to look forward to - including our Health and Safety Night for parents on October 13, Red Ribbon Week starting October 25, and Halloween celebrations on October 29. In between these events, October also typically carries with it the settling in of routines and turning the corner from getting to know you activities - school’s “honeymoon” period - to more academic rigor. This year, especially, requires specific attention devoted to the social emotional needs of our children, and this is going to take the combined efforts of everyone in the community.
On Friday, during our staff institute day, we will take time to focus on social emotional learning supports that provide students and staff stability and consistency and that promote positive behavior in and out of school. Staff will have time to examine classroom and building practices that are working well, identify where breakdowns are occurring, and create plans for how to address what is needed. I am grateful for the opportunity to work in a community that supports the professional development of the staff, for the purpose of improving our learning environment and living by our motto, “At OGS, Children Come First!” Thank You!
BARK - Parent Control Monitoring App
In preparation for the October 13 Health and Safety Parent Night, we have several helpful resources to share from our BARK representatives. First, here is the OGS code for the free service: FREE Bark Jr Offer and enter OGSD. Also, BARK and the CDC collaborated on this study “linking past online behavior in youth to future events of suicide and self-harm.” The documentary Childhood 2.0 “is required viewing for anyone who wants to better understand the world their children are navigating as they grow up in the digital age. Featuring actual parents and kids as well as industry-leading experts in child safety and development, this documentary dives into the real-life issues facing kids today — including cyberbullying, online predators, suicidal ideation, and more.”
Severe Weather Drill
This week, on Thursday, we will practice “sheltering in place” for our severe weather drill. Staff will go through the expectations with students regarding the purpose of the drill, the space/s where students will safely shelter, how to protect their heads, etc.
