AFC Elementary Monthly Memo
November 2023
AFC Attendance Policy
As a friendly reminder, per our AFC Student Handbook:
Excessive tardies or absences may be referred to the Lee/Ogle/Whiteside Regional Office of Education’s Attendance Support Program for assistance. A student may be referred to the Attendance Support Program after four (4) unexcused and nine (9) excused absences during the previous 180 days of school attendance. If a student misses three (3) consecutive days, they must bring in a physician’s note for the absences to be considered excused. Also, after nine (9) absences per school year, to excuse each absence thereafter, a physician’s note will be required within 24 hours of the student’s return to school. While seeking a medical excuse, the student’s parent or guardian must still comply with absence notification procedures. Students are permitted to return to school while a physician’s note is being obtained, assuming the student has been fever, vomit, and diarrhea free for 24 hours (fever must be below 100.4 without fever-reducing medications).

Physical Education & Health
It's been another active month in the gym!
The older students have just wrapped up their volleyball unit. They worked on the basics of bumping and setting, learned how to do the underhand and overhand serve, and gained a general understanding of the rules of the game. It takes a lot of eye hand coordination and communication when playing volleyball! Nuke em' was no doubt the favorite game for all!
The younger classes have been focused on learning proper form when throwing and catching various size objects. Trying to keep our eye on the ball to make a good catch and getting our hands and feet to move in the right direction all play a key role. They enjoyed all kinds of games while practicing this fundamental skill.
Health class wrapped up our exploration of the muscular system with the focus on keeping our heart healthy. We are now moving on to the skeletal system and discovering all the things bones do to keep us up and moving. We will be constructing life size skeletons and learning the names of some of our main bones.
Our Skating Unit is right around the corner. Notes went home on Monday with all the details. Please check your child's backpack! The cost is $10. This includes skate rental, helmets and wrist guards for the week. If you prefer your child to bring their own safety gear that is fine. We do have to use the provided skates as they are guaranteed not to damage our gym floor. Please return the permission slip and deposit by Friday, Nov. 17th!
