This year, our Meet the Teacher will look different. Our teachers will be reaching out to their families Tuesday, August 18th by phone. They will also be posting a welcome video tour of their classroom on their web pages! We plan to have these ready to view on the 19th, so be sure to visit your teacher’s webpage with your child to see their new teacher, and to take a look at their new classroom!

We will need your help to ensure your child gets to their classroom quickly and safely. So, please put a nametag or tape on your child’s backpack that includes their full name and their teacher’s name. This will be SO important, especially for our littlest learners. We want to make sure we can get them to their classrooms while helping them to feel secure and safe so they can have a great first day of school!

You will also need to make sure that your child comes to school on the first day wearing a mask. Students wearing their masks during transitions is going to be very important, and that includes coming into the building each day. During transitions, ALL First and Second graders must have them on, and all Pre-K and Kindergarteners need to try to wear them (we realize it will be a learning curve for our littlest ones). Given new guidance from our local health authority, once in their classrooms students will be strongly encouraged to wear their masks during class time. Our local health authority has reinforced that wearing a mask is the best protection against the spread of COVID-19, and a student who has had "close contact" and is not wearing a mask will be more likely to need to be quarantined. If quarantined, your child would not be able to be physically present on campus for 14 days, without exception. This is because the virus can take up to 14 days to present symptoms. So, to help us stop the spread, and reduce the possibility of your child being quarantined, we need you to help us by encouraging your child to wear their masks at all times. On the first day of school, we will give students an additional mask and a gator to take home for future use.

AND....Please don't forget to send a filled water bottle. For the safety of our students, our drinking fountains have been turned into water bottle fillers! So your child will need their water bottle with them each day. We request that the water bottle be a no-spill top (like the ones with a flip top with a straw or bite valve) so there aren't wet backpacks and desktops.

Our Remote Learners will have a 10 minute Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies Synchronous mini-lesson each day (totaling 40 minutes). In addition to these lessons, they will also get a 20 minute daily remote group time with their homeroom teacher for academic support. There will be 30 minutes of additional Synchronous learning time weekly for your child to connect with their homeroom class. Attending these Synchronous learning times daily is expected, and will help guide your student through their Asynchronous work for the remainder of the school day. Your child's homeroom teacher will give you the specific lesson times for your child's Synchronous learning, and will make sure your questions are answered for Google Classroom (the learning platform your child will be using). Keep an eye out for specific daily schedules on your teacher's web page.

Reminder - School Supply Pick-Up for our Remote Learners is THIS Friday, the 14th from 10:00-2:00. Please line up as you do during morning drop-off, and remain in your car. We will bring the supplies out to you. The only information we will need is your student’s name and grade level. Please remember to wear your mask.

Great news for returning families! If you were issued Car Rider pro tags last year, they will still work for this current year. If you are new to Shady Grove, when you come for the campus tour, we will have a table set up for you to get your tags if you have a student you will be picking up daily from the car rider line.

If you are picking up your student in the Car Rider line daily, all you need is your Car Rider Pro tag hanging on your rear-view mirror. You will use the RIGHT lane to pick up a Pre-K and/or Kinder student, and the LEFT lane will be used to pick up 1st and/or 2nd grade student. If you have a student in both age groups, you will use the RIGHT lane to pick up.

Because we can't have parent to student contact (as students are coming out of the front doors to get to their cars), we will not be allowing parent walk ups at pick up time. All parents must stay in your vehicle and go through the line. This will also be the same protocol for drop-off.

One of the most significant changes to our new school year is the revision of our visitors guidelines. As a part of the districts’ Smart Restart, campuses are not allowing visitors in the buildings. This means there will be no visitors at any time, including: drop off, breakfast (which will now be offered in the classrooms), lunch or pick up. This is a HUGE adjustment for us all, but is a key part of keeping our staff and students safe and well. That being said, August the 20th will look very different without parents coming in on the first day of school.

In order to help ensure the safety of our students, we will not be able to accept any outside food this year. In the past food was typically brought to school for birthdays or sometimes a lunch for students. All BCISD campuses are following this new safety protocol this school year.

So, if a child forgets their lunch, they will be signed up first thing in the morning to get a lunch from the cafeteria. We won't be able to accept a lunch brought up to school by a parent for any reason.

Birthdays are important, and we will be sure to make your child's birthday as special as possible, including a birthday announcement, sticker and pencil. In addition, each teacher has their own special way of acknowledging students' birthdays in the classroom.
