Hello Sunset Lake Families,

Great news for our VCS District this week! Our first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination for our staff was successful. We THANK YOU-- for your flexibility with the late notice of the half-day of school this past Thursday. You should have received a district notice that our second dose of vaccinations will take place on Thursday, February 25th. We will have another half-day on 2/25/21 and our Mid-Winter Break is 2/26/21.

These staff vaccinations will really help us stay the course with our instructional days and will help keep our staff in school!

We also want to thank you for your flexibility with this week's in-person student virtual conferences held Thursday. We know some of you had to switch times to adjust for our vaccinations so THANK YOU! Our second evening of virtual conferences for our in-person students will be next Thursday, February 4th from 4:30-7:30 pm. Please be sure to have an understanding from your child's teacher of the role your child will have in our upcoming virtual conferences. Although our second-semester conferences have typically been student-led some teachers may be conducting conferences a little differently this year due to the different challenges with virtual conferences.

Our Student Lighthouse Team met with Mrs. Malito and had a great kick-off. The students will be implementing our Sunset Solution Seeking Dropbox to hear about ideas or concerns that all of our Sunset Student Leaders may have. There is already a plan in the works to ensure that we can recruit and grow our Student Lighthouse Team for the 2021-22 school year. More information on that will be shared in late spring.

We ask if there is anyone in the household who is being tested for COVID-19 to keep your child home until the test results come back. Also, please be sure to go through the student screener questions (see below) each day before you send your child(ren) to school.

As always we continue to encourage all of our families to try and keep safety precautions in mind. Every measure counts and together we can try and minimize the negative impact COVID-19 could have on your child's education.

KVIC: Your child's end of semester report cards will be mailed out Monday, February 1st. If you don't receive your child's report or have questions regarding their progress please contact Tamara Young at 321-1562 or email Chris VanderMei, your child's teacher. Thank You!

VCS Virtual: Our Vicksburg Virtual Students conferences are scheduled for the evening of February 2nd and February 4th. February 5th conferences will be held during the school day.

Your child's report cards will be mailed from our office shortly after their conference. If you are unsure if your child has materials to pick up please check with your child(ren)'s teacher. Please just come to our front door to buzz the front office. We will bring your child's material out to you. The best time for pick up is typically 9-3 pm to help avoid the busy times of drop-off and pick-up times.

If you or someone you know will have a student starting Kindergarten next fall, please contact our office at 321-1550. It's hard to believe, but we are starting to plan for our spring Kindergarten Kickoff 2021-2022!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we would like to ensure our students have a chance to celebrate this holiday safely. *THIS HAS CHANGED SINCE LAST WEEK- WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY CONFUSION.

Please have your child bring in their Valentines for their classmates between February 1st and February 8th. This will allow our teachers to secure the Valentines safely in a quarantine place. This is much like our protocol for our library books to help reduce the spread of germs.

Our classrooms will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12th.

As with our snack request, we ask that all treats are purchased or from a professional bakery, We are not accepting home-baked items this year.

Picture Retake day will be Friday, Feb 19th. This will also be picture day for all virtual students. In person student retakes will be first thing in the morning. Virtual students may come anytime between 10:30 and 1:30. If you have questions, please call the office at 269-321-1500. As soon as we have ordering info, we will pass that along. Thanks for your patience with all the rescheduling.

February is Black History Month and we are excited to share that we are celebrating with lessons in literacy. Each grade level will be learning the rich history of Black Americans that have impacted our country or maybe learning more about Black culture and it's history during this month. Our Special's Teachers are also embedding lessons or artifacts during February that celebrate Black History. We are looking forward to this month of learning and celebrations!

Please please please have your kids check lost and found. The number of hats and gloves is really high.

Generous Hands is still distributing food weekly. Currently they are serving 227 students in all six of the Vicksburg schools. Although that seems like a lot of students, they feel they can help many more students with their supports and services.
