Every School Day Counts
Every school day counts. Attendance affects student achievement (NCES). The relationship between attendance and achievement is noticeable early in a child's school career, even as early as Kindergarten. Research shows that students who eventually dropped out of high school missed a significantly greater amount of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. Absenteeism during the early years of a child's school career is a predictor of low achievement in latter school years.
The effects of lost school days build up one absence at a time on individual students. Tardies and Early sign-outs build up over time and amount to a loss of instruction and learning. Please make sure your students are in school when they can be. Anytime they are away from school, they miss out on learning a skill or a concept that they may never have the opportunity to pick up in the future. This affects their academic performance, not because they lack the ability to learn, but because they missed learning particular skills and concepts.
The bottom line is that every day matters in education. Every moment matters in education. Attendance matters. (Click here to read full NCES Every School Day Counts article.)

Parties at School
As we stated in our opening day faculty staff presentation, we are no longer able to celebrate birthdays in the same we used to, but we have provided some alternatives to how we celebrate birthdays and other special occasions. We have a statement on our website for parents to see. Please take a look at School Celebrations- Parties At School under the Welcome Toolkit on the Bunker Hill Elementary School website to see the update. In West Virginia, we are governed by West Virginia Child Nutrition Policy 4321.1. Please consult with administration if you are unclear on this policy.
School Safety
One of our emphasis at the start of the school year is School Safety. During the first two weeks of school, we will practice various emergency drills. Additionally, we will review with some students and teach others procedures for safely traveling down the hallway, conducting oneself in the cafeteria, arriving safely in the morning, and departing safely in the afternoon.
