Reopening Update
Superintendent Baier provided an update on school reopening. COVID-19 cases have continued to remain rare and isolated on our campuses, even with more students back in person. We thank the community for its vigilance in continuing to track symptoms and stay home when feeling sick.
Graduations
LASD is thrilled to celebrate its 8th graders with a graduation ceremony to commemorate their hard work, growth and learning with us in the Los Altos School District. We're thrilled to be able to celebrate safely together in person after a very challenging school year. Your principal will provide more information in coming weeks. Graduations will be held on Wednesday, June 9 with Egan at 11am at Los Altos High School and Blach at 5pm at Mountain View High School.
Our elementary schools will also celebrate their students on Wednesday, June 9 through morning events to commemorate this year of learning together, and in particular, our 6th graders who will move on to junior high school next year.
For more information, check out item H.1. on our agenda online.
Extended Learning Opportunities Grant
LASD has the opportunity to receive approximately $2.28 million in state funding to assist with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the upcoming school year. In order to obtain funding, the school district must present a plan to show how funds will be used to provide supplemental instruction, support for social emotional well being, and to the maximum extent permissible, meals and snacks to specified student groups who have faced adverse learning and social-emotional circumstances. These students include low-income, English learners, foster youth, and others.
With input from our LCAP survey, a principal-teacher task force, and meetings with each principal, LASD will determine which students need additional support in English Language Arts and Math. Through a similar process, students who need additional social-emotional support to address any barriers to learning will be identified. With the grant funds, LASD will hire the additional staff needed to provide this critical academic support to ensure every student's success. LASD will also implement learning hubs, additional academic services for students and training for staff to support students.
For more information, please view item H.2. on our agenda online.
Board Meeting Schedule Change
In light of community feedback, the Los Altos School District Board of Trustees directed staff to take necessary steps to change its meeting schedule so that it will not conflict with Mountain View Los Altos High School District Board meetings. The Los Altos Board of Trustees will meet the first and third Monday of each month for the 2021-22 school year, with some exceptions due to holidays. The Board hopes this will allow for greater community engagement and continue to provide transparency in its decision-making process. The final 2021-22 Board meeting schedule will be voted upon at the next Board meeting on May 24.
For more information, please review item H.7.
