Principal's Message
Happy New Year Families!
The new year really came in with a vengeance, but we are so grateful to be back in session with students! One of the pillars of our Spanish Immersion Program is cultural competence. Teaching students about the cultures, customs, holidays and practices of Spanish speaking countries helps them to better understand their new language they are learning at school. Teachers and interns planned a wide variety of activities for their classrooms/grade levels including arts, crafts, songs, dancing, and more. Check out some photos HERE.
While the kids are enjoying playing on the snow mounds on the playground, those in the streets are another story! WOW! Please make sure your child comes to school with the proper snow gear (coat, snow pants, boots, and mittens/gloves) so they can play in the snow!
Thank you all for your patience navigating the streets around the school that have recently become one lane for traffic. The massive amounts of snow, along with our limited parking, have created some new challenges for drop-off and pick-up at school. Please continue to be mindful of our neighbors who are trying to leave their driveways to get to work by 8:00am. Please do not allow your child to leave your car while it is in the middle of the street. We have had a few close calls where students were almost hit and we know no one wants that to happen! You can park in the church parking lot to walk your child to the playground if you wish. Be mindful of your speed in the parking lot as it is not a drive through street.
Thank you for working together with us to create a fun, nurturing, and safe learning environment for all our students!
I am looking forward to all the great things 2023 will bring!
Your principal,
Tracy Vik

Mentors Needed
SSE family and friends,
We are looking for some caring adults to mentor students here at Sonia Sotomayor.
Mentoring is a unique way to give back to our school community. This simple program is highly rewarding and means so much to the child. LSS Mentoring Services has been part of the Sioux Falls community since 2001. Through the years they have helped thousands of students and volunteers connect in meaningful ways through a mentoring relationship. They are in partnership with all of the public schools in the Sioux Falls School District and there is a big need for additional mentors across our community. Mentors meet once a week at school for about 40 minutes. The student will eat lunch and together you will play a game or do an activity that is provided by the school. Mentors can choose what school they mentor at and what grade level they would like to work with. We serve students in grades K-8 through the LSS In School Mentor Program. We match mentors with students throughout the school year, so now is a perfect time to start!
The first step to get started is to apply: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3661503/Mentor-Application. When we have processed your application, you will be invited to training. All LSS mentors are prepared for their role and ready to make a difference! Please contact LSS Mentoring Services at 605-444-7803, visit Mentoring.LssSD.org or email LSS at Mentoring@LssSD.org if you have questions or need additional information.

We need host families!
Being a host family is a wonderful opportunity to open your home and your heart to a student from another country. It allows you to learn about a different culture and make a lasting impact on the intern as well as your family. As a host family, you will provide the intern with a safe and comfortable place to live and study, as well as a few other essentials. Your willingness to welcome a student into your home will be greatly appreciated, as it will provide them with a comfortable and familiar environment during their time abroad. New Staff Spotlight
Glenys Alvarez-Intern (K02)
During my teaching practice I was a middle school and high school teacher. I also teach English to children in my community in my free time. I am a proactive person and I like to learn a little bit of everything for my personal and professional development.
I feel very fortunate to be part of the staff of this great school this year and also to be able to share my culture and my language with each of my students. Being a representative of my country is a source of pride for me and being able to learn from each of the people from Sonia Sotomayor and from this city fills me with motivation every single day.
Beatriz Hernández Franco-Intern (K01)
Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a teacher. I decided to study Kindergarten and Elementary Education because I could not decide which ages I would like to teach.
I love to spend my time painting, playing the guitar and the ukulele, and hanging out with my friends.
Júlia Meregalli-Intern
I'm from Barcelona, Spain. I finished my degree in Primary Education two years ago. I also studied for a postgraduate degree in Learning Difficulties and Disorders and I learned a lot about this topic. Last year, I lived in Dublin, Ireland with my friends and I worked in a kindergarten school. I really enjoyed that experience.
My hobbies include hanging out with my friends, watching sports with my family and friends, doing gymnastics, going to the cinema and theater, listening to music, and watching series and movies. My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family and friends. I also love to travel around the world. I've traveled around Europe and the United States. Also, my favorite foods are pasta, pizza, fried chicken, dips, and salads.
Since I was a kid, one of my dreams was to come to the United States and spend time learning about their methodology and American culture.
