Online Ed News You Can Use
Winter 2017
BYE-BYE Blackboard and Moodle!
Another reminder: This spring is the final semester in which Blackboard and Moodle are options for teaching at MiraCosta. All spring course shells are available in Canvas - Blackboard classes will NOT be automatically created. Any faculty wanting to use Blackboard this spring must request a class to be set up via the Online Ed support request form. As always, faculty wanting to use Moodle need to contact Karen Turpin.
Canvas Support & Training Options
Looking to improve your Canvas skills over break?
- Through 2/15, MiraCosta faculty have access to multiple daily live online training sessions from Canvas. Sign up for an account using your @miracosta.edu email address and take advantage of this!
- Use some of the extensive support resources for Canvas developed and recommended by our Canvas Transition Team.
- Join the independent study version of our 4-week Introduction to Teaching with Canvas class.
- Once PDP releases the spring Flex week schedule, sign up for some of the many Canvas workshops to be offered that week.
- The 24-7 Canvas support phone number will continue to be available even when our college is closed! For faculty the number is (833) 345-2890 - or just click Help on the left Canvas menu.
Zero Textbook Cost materials
As of this writing, 132 spring classes have been designated as Zero-Textbook Cost (ZTC) and display the logo at left in SURF. MiraCosta also has a standalone webpage listing all ZTC classes. If you are teaching a ZTC class and have not yet designated it as such, see the directions for doing so in SURF.
How is a ZTC class defined? In SB 1359, these are classes “that exclusively use digital course materials that are free of charge to students and may have a low-cost option for print versions.” Such materials “may include open educational resources, institutionally licensed campus library materials that all students enrolled in the course have access to use, and other properly licensed and adopted materials.”

Please Update Online Class Schedule
For those teaching an online or hybrid course this spring, please make sure your class description is up to date on the separate Online Class Schedule page. Students use this page to learn how to get started with your class, and you can provide other important information there to help students prepare for success. See detailed instructions if needed.
Professional Learning Opportunities
- @One has rolled out a brand new website that's worth exploring. Take note especially of the Reflective Writing Club that launches 1/26/18 and a free online conference called Digital Learning Day on 2/22/18.
- The 2018 Online Teaching Conference website is up - check it out and note that the Call for Proposals has a deadline of 1/26/18. MiraCosta faculty who present at OTC may have their travel costs covered through Online Ed.
- If you teach a fully online C-ID approved course in Canvas, you are eligible to receive support from the CCC Online Education Initiative in preparation for possibly offering the class on the Course Exchange. Learn more about the OEI/Course Exchange and/or sign up for an informational meeting.
- Check out an archive of a MiraCosta Online Education workshop.
- Join the MiraCosta PDP Canvas site.
