The First Six Weeks of School, or Responsive Classroom
By Lisa Dibble,
Curriculum and Instruction Coach, Lower Campus
At GLOBE, we take the first few weeks of school to lay the foundation for a successful school year. During this time, teachers focus on getting to know the students and building classroom communities. They are also explicitly teaching the routines and procedures so students can work with autonomy for the rest of the year.
Some of the intentions of the first six weeks of school are to create a climate and tone of warmth and safety, teach the schedules and routines, and establish expectations about how we will learn together in the year ahead.
Your child might talk about practicing walking in the hallways or lining up. They may say they “played” with toys. We introduce our materials by allowing students time to explore. After they explore, we discuss how we will use them in the classroom and the expectations around caring for them. The students have a few minutes of “Quiet Time” after lunch or recess. This allows them to transition into the second part of their day.
This week, teachers will begin talking to students about their hopes and dreams or learning goals. This would also be a great conversation for you to start at home. What do they want to learn? In what area would they like to improve? What do they hope kindergarten, first, second, third grade will be like?
Teachers are also beginning to talk about topics students can write about. What are some memories or experiences your child enjoyed? Who are their favorite people? Having these conversations in advance may help students who have a hard time sharing at the start of the school year.

Campus notes
Lower Campus, August 30, 6pm–8pm
Upper Campus, September 1, 6pm–8pm
We look forward to welcoming parents into the building during Curriculum Night (see dates and times above). Due to capacity limitations, we ask that children do not attend.
Curriculum Night is a time for parents to come and meet the teaching teams. The teachers will be giving an overview of what you can expect for your child/ren. They will also go over expectations for their classroom, the curriculum, and how to stay informed.

The safety of our 'walker' students, and responsible parking
In the interest of safety, once students who walk home are safely across Briarcliff Road, parents/guardians need to be there to meet them, or arrangements made for their safe onward journey.
Previously, many GLOBE families would park their vehicle in the lot belonging to the church across the road from UC. Unfortunately, construction work is about to begin at that location, and access has been closed off. As a result, GLOBE families have had to find other places to park whilst they meet their children, and in some cases this can significantly impact the flow of through traffic, especially on the main roads, during drop-off and pick-up times.
Please remember that it is illegal to park within 30 feet of stop signs in Georgia. Drivers that continuously break this rule, or block driveways and mailboxes, are at risk of receiving a traffic fine and/or causing traffic delays, so please choose the wider, less congested roads, park in safe spots, be courteous to our neighbors and remember our CREST values. Thank you.
Uniforms and dress code
We have been reminding students to always be in compliance with the uniforms and dress code. You can review the uniform requirements on our website, here.
Carpool
Thank you for being so organized and patient outside of the campus, as you wait for the carpool to begin. Once you have joined the line, whenever possible, please turn off your engine. This potentially produces less heat for those around, less monoxide for the community to breathe, and less fuel consumption for you.
GLOBE Athletics
We are off to a great start this year! We have over 40 students trying out for both Girls Volleyball and Boys Soccer. Teams for both sports will be announced on Monday during the day.
Cross Country (Boys and Girls)
Wednesday, August 24, 3:30pm–5pm. See flyer.
Meet in the Cafeteria at UC for an orientation meeting and practice on campus. Be sure to bring proper running attire and have a sports physical on file with the school, or bring it with you to the meeting.
TeamSnap update
We have over 90 families who have completed the General Registration for All Sports 2022-23 in TeamSnap. Please know that we are able to see the sports your student is interested in playing, however, we are having some technical difficulties sending out mass emails to the group via TeamSnap. We are working with our IT department to remedy this.
Athletic wear
Visit our Sideline store and check out the AUGUST SPECIAL OFFER on GLOBE athletic wear.
Connections
Please be sure your student only wears tennis shoes for PE, as we are trying to protect our beautiful gym floor.
Parent Teacher Community Council
Special Election
The PTCC has an unexpected officer vacancy and we are holding a special election to fill the slot (and backfill the Secretary position). Please review candidate bios and VOTE here!
Voting will close on Thursday, August 25 at 11:59pm.

Our online store closes August 19. Be sure to place orders now! Free shipping to school for all orders and free shipping home if you spend over $50. We will have another store in the fall with new options.

We are still working out the details but will have an event at each campus this year and will be looking for volunteers to help. 'Serving with the GLOBE Board' Event
Next week, we will hold two "Serve with the GLOBE Board" events, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the Board of Directors and how to get involved. At the meeting, you will hear from our Board Chair, Drew Reynolds, our Vice Chair, Lillian Norton, and Executive Director, Christi Elliott-Earby, about the work of our Board and how you can get involved. There are two meetings, one virtual and one in-person, as follows:
Virtual (via Zoom): Tuesday, August 23, at 12:00 noon
In-person: Friday, August 26, at 12:00 noon - This meeting will take place at either ChocoLate Coffee on Shallowford Road, or Corner Cup in Tucker. To be confirmed.
