The “orange shirt” in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given to her by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned.

The message that Phyllis wants to pass along on Orange Shirt Day — and every day — is that every child matters. Orange Shirt Day was started by Phyllis to educate people about residential schools. It is a day to affirm that every child matters.

Dear Parents of St. Patrick’s School Community,

During the 1st week of October (October 3 - 5), we will be conducting a Catholic School Review in your school community. The purpose of this process of gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information is to assist in strengthening the School Education Assurance Plan that continues to move and improve your school in the area of Catholicity. Our ultimate goal is to support faith formation and impact student learning.

This process involves gathering data and evidence through surveys, interviews, documentation reviews, and general observations. To make this a success, we need your assistance.

What can you do to help us with the process?

• Talk to your children about their school experience and how they can contribute to the process by speaking with the review team or by taking a survey during this week. All grade 3 and grade 4 students will be surveyed and some of them will be chosen to be interviewed.

• Let us know if you would be willing to have a short interview with a member of the team. This can be conducted in person or by phone during the day and into the early evening.

This year at St.Pat's we have implemented a School Behaviour Matrix. This matrix was created by students and staff at the end of last school year on how to use our school spaces appropriately and continue to make our school an AMAZING place to learn and grow!

My name is Erica Lucas, I am the new chair of Parent council! I am honoured to take on this new role,and can’t wait for the year ahead. I joined parent council 6 years ago when my daughter started kindergarten, was a director for one year and have been the treasurer for the past 3 years. I love being involved in the school and school activities. We have lots of great parents on parents council with lots of great ideas. Reminder to register for hot lunch!

Each year you have to register your child for hot lunch with their new teacher.

In the next few months as a school we will be practicing our Emergency Drills. This will include 3 practice fire drills, 1 practice lockdown and 1 shelter in place.

SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS

The office hours are: 8:00 - 3:30 during scheduled school days.

If calling during lunch time (12:00 - 12:30) please leave a message and Ms. Miller will return your call as soon as she can.

Remember to phone and book an appointment if you need to come into the school @ 780-672-2177. To report an absense call the school office or email stps@eics.ab.ca

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Parents wanting to volunteer at the school or for field trips need to have a Criminal Record Check, Child Intervention Check and sign a Volunteer Confidentiality Undertaking form.

Request forms for these can be picked up at the school office. If you are unsure if you have these documents already completed you can call the office and we can check. These checks can take a while to process so if you are wanting to volunteer please get these done ASAP.

END OF DAY PHONE MESSAGES TO STUDENTS

If you have a message to pass onto your child for end of day arrangements please call the school office no later than 3:10 pm. It is very difficult to track down a child once they have left the classroom at the end of the school day.

Our busing is through Battle River School Division. If you have busing questions or still need to register for busing call 780-672-6131.

****PLEASE STAY CLEAR FROM BUS LANES AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR DAY AND AT THE END OF OUR DAY*****

We do have our Gr. 4's provide crosswalk patrol in front of the school but this likely will NOT occur for a few weeks until they have been properly trained. Please be careful using the crosswalks as our front street (53 Ave) is very busy before and after school.
