La Mesa Update
October 24, 2021
Hello La Mesa Families,
We hope you are enjoying the cooler weather. It is an opportunity for everyone to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Getting outside can also mean getting off electronics.
When was the last time you logged into your child's social media accounts? Some parents are hesitant to do this as they think it is a violation of their child's privacy. If 455 of their "closest friends" can see who they are online, why can't we as parents? It really isn't about privacy. It is about being engaged in our children's lives both online and offline. When we give our children free range online 24/7, we are essentially setting them loose in Los Angeles with no supervision and no support. How many of us would drop our children off in the middle of LA at 11:30pm at night?
The impact of student online behavior spills over to school daily, despite the personal device policy at La Mesa that limits their access during school hours. Some students use social media to harass and bully, while some are harassed and bullied. Being online well into the night limits sleep and ultimately their ability to focus and learn while at school. And time spent scrolling Instagram feeds or their TikTok For You Page results in time lost for studying, being active, and interacting with friends and family in person.
Parenting is hard. Please know that the La Mesa staff is here to partner and support you during what may be the hardest two years of their lives. We appreciate you all!

Halloween Costume Guide for October 29th
Halloween can be a fun time for students to express their creativity and have fun. While we want to allow students the opportunity to celebrate, we still need maintain a positive and appropriate learning environment. We need your help in ensuring that the costumes worn by our students are school appropriate. With this goal in mind, the following guidelines will assist students in making their costume choices:
1. Dress code applies – this includes attire that is modest and respectful
2. Students must be identifiable
3. No weapons or imitation weapons
4. Gang attire will not be considered an appropriate costume choice
5. Students should be sensitive to other people when making their costume choices.
We will be monitoring costumes throughout the day. We understand that there is subjectivity to what some might consider appropriate. Our goal is to ensure learning is still the primary focus of the day. Administration will make the final determination. Students that are deemed inappropriately costumed will be changed out and not permitted to wear the costume at school. Students are encouraged to share their costume plan with an administrator beforehand if they feel it could be questionable.
We appreciate your support in helping us to allow students to celebrate a fun day and still get a quality education.
