It's Great To Connect With You!

Hello ÉCKS School Community,

Welcome to a wonderful school year. We look forward to welcoming our new students along with our returning students.

It's going to be a great year and we can't wait to bring our school community together on September 6, 2022.

As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to our administration.

Administrator Update

We would like to share some information with our school community. At the end of June, Mr. Brandt accepted a part-time position as Division Principal with the school division. This will be along with maintaining his principalship at ECKS. In order to support this transition, Mr. Ramsay has taken on the role of Co-Principal in our school.

Orientation for Students New to ÉCKS

We want to ensure that students who are new to our school have the opportunity to see the building prior to the first day of classes. If you wish to take advantage of this, we will be inviting students in on September 2. See the schedule below. Parents and guardians are welcome to accompany your child into the school during this brief orientation.

We are asking that students arrive no more than five minutes prior to their scheduled time. Students will meet their homeroom teacher outside the main entrance.

9:00 - 9:30 - Students in 6A, 6B and 6C only

9:30 - 10:00 - Students in 6D, 6E, 6F and 6G only

10:00 - 10:30 - Students in Grade 7 and 8 who are new to ÉCKS only

Entrances and Exits to School

Five of the exterior doors will be utilized as entrances and exits for our students. Starting on September 6, students will arrive at school and will be asked to make their way to their assigned entrance. You can find the most updated copy of the entrance map on our school website. On the first day of school, we will have staff outside the front of the school for any students who need help navigating the entrance map.

In the event, students are late or returning from an appointment, we ask that students enter the building through the main front entrance. The front door will remain unlocked throughout the day and so we are asking all visitors to check in at the office as they arrive.

Student Drop Off

We want to take the opportunity to inform you about the pickup and drop-off zones. Also, the heavy importance of students using the crosswalk which is located on the corner of 46 Street and 49 Ave. Student safety is very important to us and we worry when students run out into the street, especially because the roads around our school are very busy.

ECKS Bell Schedule

Please see the school website for the current 2022-2023 bell schedule.

Closed Campus / Lunch Break

ÉCKS will continue with a closed campus and students will not be permitted to leave the school grounds during lunch break. Students will eat in their homeroom. Students will head outside for half of their lunch hour and one recess break daily so please ensure your children have dressed appropriately every day.

Microwaves

Microwaves are once again permitted. One microwave per classroom will be available for student use. Homeroom teachers will determine grade and age-appropriate procedures for their use and will share that with students in the first couple of days. We ask that you refrain from sending food requiring heating for the first week of classes to allow for the teachers to establish procedures with their class. Please remember that microwaves are intended for warming (i.e., not cooking) food and that microwave popcorn is not permitted. We continue to encourage the use of Thermos containers to bring warm food from home to avoid line-ups.

Student Academic Progress

Battle River School Division will be embarking on a pilot program this year with regard to how student's academic progress will be reported. Historically, Report cards were used to inform parents/guardians of student performance at a specific period in time. With our recent move to PowerSchool, BRSD parents now have real-time access to their child’s academics and growth through the parent portal or the PowerSchool phone application. Many jurisdictions throughout the province have also made the move to digital reporting with positive results. Effective the 2022-2023 school year, ÉCKS school has asked to participate in a pilot program and therefore, will no longer be sending home a printed report card as a progress report.

This change to reporting is intended to ensure you can:

  1. Have real time information on your child’s learning;

  2. Check on assessment results anytime - not limited to 3Xs per year;

  3. Partner in your child’s learning - not an observer;

  4. Help your child in a timely manner - not two months later - missing assignments can be dealt with before they become an issue;

  5. Readily access teacher feedback on assignments and better support student learning;

  6. Be engaged in the learning process - it’s a partnership;

  7. Stay in close communication with teacher(s)

Please note that any parents without access to technology should contact our school so that you can set up arrangements for timely reporting of your child's progress.

School Council Meeting

On September 13, 2022 at 7:00 pm, we will host a hybrid school council meeting. We will host an in-person meeting in the Staff Room. We will also welcome any parents virtually through Google Meet.

Parents and guardians play an important role in student success. School councils allow parents to participate in decisions that impact student learning. By contributing knowledge, perspective, and ideas at school council meetings, parents actively contribute to the success of the school community.

If you are interested in joining virtually through Google Meet, please email Pam Boyson, the Chair of our School Council at ecksparentcouncil@gmail.com to request the link.
