Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
November 2023
Hello 4-H Families
Leadership Opportunities
Leadership is "a broad concept related to the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and aspirations utilized by one or more persons in influencing, motivating, inspiring and otherwise causing desired actions and reactions by others." Leadership and positive development occur when youth participate in intrinsically motivating activities taught by caring and competent adults. Youth develop meaningful relationships with peers and learn skills important for managing life situations. In this month’s newsletter, you will note several opportunities for our senior-level youth to participate in club, county, state, and even national leadership development opportunities.
At the state level, our county 4-H Educator, Gretchen Sumbrum, is an advisor on our Maryland State Council, a premiere leadership opportunity to represent 4-H throughout the state (Open House info can be found here). Members looking to focus on a specific subject while having fun, should consider competing on a bowl team. Youth involved in Animal projects might consider submitting their Project Records, Summary Report, and an essay for our Maryland 4-H State Animal Science Project and Record Awards Program (applications due 11/15).
We have 5 National Trip opportunities for youth interested in traveling within the country in 2024, engaging and learning with other 4-H delegates. Applications for the National 4-H Conference (April) are due Nov 14, while the 4 other trip applications are due January 15th. The Ignite 4-H Ultimate Teen Summit will be held just an hour away from us in Washington, DC on March 13-17. Youth participate in 4 days of workshops, inspiring and engaging panel discussions, and other explorative activities in STEM, Agriscience, Healthy Living, Career Readiness, and Emotional Well-Being.
For youth not quite ready for state/national trips, keep in mind the many unique experiences 4-H membership provides at the club level. Youth may participate as a club officer, guiding club activities/finances, or as a committee member, steering club involvement in a particular topic. Our Diamond Clover program offers many levels of leadership involvement and goal-setting skill development. Involvement in the fair with various indoor exhibits, skill contests, demonstrations, and animal projects teaches the importance of perseverance to youth as they navigate presenting their unique interests. Many adults mention they wish they had been given the opportunity as a youth to participate in public speaking workshops (like those we offer) to develop oral communication skills. Our annual residential camp includes multistage teen leadership training that many youth are able to apply to other experiences outside of camp. And finally, our record book program teaches the importance of record keeping, planning, and handling finances, as well as many other important life skills.
Please remember our County 4-H office offers both financial support (scholarships for youth trips/opportunities), as well as skill development support for officer training, record book/portfolio assistance, and interview preparation. Our goal is to provide unique, experiential learning opportunities to provide today’s youth with the skills that will enable them to thrive in our busy, modern world.
Regards,
Gretchen & Joy

Girls Leading Change
Internation Day of Women
On October 11, 2023, fifteen 4-H'ers from around the state were invited to the program 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 with Dr. Jill Biden, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Jennifer Klein, Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Gender Policy Council and girls from around the country who have made small and large scale change in their communities. It was, in a word from one of our youngest attendees, Flora, "inspiring."
Led by our Maryland 4-H Foundation Director, Lauren Mohler, our youth heard of these young women's fantastic work in their communities. Afterward, our youth had some of the following about what they heard and saw. Aliya said, "It inspired herself and others to be themselves and confident." "The program reminded me to drive more change in 4-H", said Ester.
Other girls like Morgan said, "This program spoke about being brave, fearless, and having determination in small and large ways in your community." And Shelby had this thought, "I learned about the many ways you can create change with different possibilities." Dionna suggested, "Your voice matters." And Mariah thought, "I am inspired to change the world if you have a vision and want to make a change in your community."

4-H VOLUNTEER/LEADER INFO
ALL VOLUNTEERS - 3 year background checks are due
The University of Maryland Extension and Maryland 4-H Program thank you for your continued service to positive youth development. Your commitment of time, energy and resources benefits so many youth across the state and is essential to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all youth in Maryland.
In 2021, UME initiated a new volunteer background check policy in order to provide for the safety and well-being of University of Maryland Extension (UME) volunteers and constituents (e.g., staff members, program participants, and the community) as well as to protect UME’s assets and reputation as a service provider. The policy requires that volunteers be background checked every 3 years. Calendar year 2024 would be the first recertification period for individuals who completed their background check in 2021. In order to align the background check process with the annual re-enrollment process through 4-H Online, we will begin the volunteer background check renewal process this fall. This should allow for a smooth re-enrollment process and reduce the chance of gaps in protection or appointments.
As a current volunteer you will need to complete the background check process this fall. We will provide notification of the need for renewal according to the following schedule:
● September - volunteers initially screened in January – April of 2021 (sent out already)
● October – volunteers initially screened in May – August of 2021
● November – volunteers initially screened in September – December of 2021
The notification to renew your background check will come from Sterling Volunteers. Their email address is “theadvocates@sterlingvolunteers.com”. The background check should be completed within 30 days of invitation to avoid separation and dismissal and assure your 2024 enrollment is approved by the March 1 target deadline.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but appreciate your support of this process.
Now is the time to begin preparing for rollover to the 2024 4-H program year. As in past years, 4-H Online will close mid-December for System Managers to make updates and program next year’s enrollment. The 4-H Online access timetable will be as follows:
December 1 - Enrollment closed for 2023. The enrollment function will be disabled; families will not be able to create a NEW youth or volunteer enrollment. Unapproved youth/Cloverbud and volunteer enrollments will be deleted. However, families will still be able to log in to and view their profiles, register for events, complete financial transactions, etc.
December 15 - 4-H Online access will be closed to both families and Managers (login will be disabled) for the remainder of 2022.
First week of January 2023 - 4-H Online open to Managers and families for 2023 enrollment.
