A note from Ms. Walsh (featuring Det. Gobbi, MBPD)
Happy Wednesday Lions! I hope everyone had a great short week, and that you all enjoy the upcoming long weekend. Last week all of our students had the pleasure of attending a presentation on cyberbullying and cybersecurity from Detective Gobbi of the Mendham Borough Police Department. Students were taught the importance of keeping passwords safe and not sharing personal information online (i.e. location, full name, birthday and family information). Students were also educated on topics of cyberbullying: what constitutes cyberbullying, how to respond in cyberbullying situations, and who to report it to.
Please read the following note from Detective Gobbi on what parents should know about keeping their child/children safe online:
What parents should know about kids and internet safety:
Younger children are using chat forums and messaging in online games on computers, and older children who have cell phones are using apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok or are participating in online chat rooms on platforms such as Discord. With the amount of time that children spend on devices, it is important to talk about internet safety with your children:
• Don’t share passwords
• Don’t enter private chats or direct messages with strangers
• Never give out personal information
• Make screen names that are not your real name to hide your identity
In the cybersecurity training last week, many 5th graders mentioned being talked to in online games by strangers asking for account information. Who pays for the phone and the data plan? Parents own the phones and are responsible for the kids using them. Parents should have the pin to unlock a phone and should follow their children on their social media platforms. Trust is earned not given. If you have reason to monitor your child online, download parental control apps like these examples:
- Bark: https://www.bark.us/
- MSPY: https://www.mspy.com/
- Qustodio: https://www.qustodio.com/en/
If you find your child engaging in inappropriate behavior online, enforce consequences such as taking the device away, changing the Wi-Fi password, limiting screen time, etc.
