Welcome to 4J Educator!
Welcome to the inaugural edition of the 4J Educator. Superintendent Andy Dey's top priorities this school year include timely communications to 4J students, families AND staff. With that in mind, the 4J Educator seeks to provide 4J staff with useful information about the district's happenings once a month (or so). Feedback is welcome at information@4j.lane.edu.
Secondary Schedule Changes on the Way
The team is reviewing various schedule options through a process that considers identified priorities. On an accelerated timeline, the team will evaluate schedule options and make a recommendation to district leadership at the end of November.
“I commend the team for its dedicated efforts on this important issue and look forward to a new schedule that will better serve the interests of all 4J's secondary students, families and staff,” shared Superintendent Dey. “The district’s priority is to maximizes opportunities for all students' academic needs, social-emotional growth and connections to peers, while providing the time needed for our valued educators to prep and collaborate so they can teach at the highest level.”
To guide its recommendations, the team has identified priorities that will be used to weigh all proposed options. Secondary school schedule priorities:
- Prioritizing access and opportunities for students receiving support services through an IEP, 504 plan, ELL, etc.;
- Providing flexibility for students so that they are allowed time to access affinity groups, enrichments, extensions and interventions;
- Increasing opportunities for collaboration amongst staff so that students receive the highest quality services;
- Optimizing class sizes where possible;
- Promoting positive relationships for students and staff;
- Meeting the minimum instructional hours required under state law
The team so far has decided to recommend a switch to semesters from the current trimester schedule in the high schools with an eye towards a smooth transition from middle to high grades.
We’ll be providing additional updates along the way, with opportunities for students and families to share their thoughts as well. We look forward to engaging the school community in this process.
Access Changes at the Ed Center
Superintendent Andy Dey has authorized all employees with a current 4J badge to be able to access the Ed Center during normal business hours without having to be buzzed in.
Balancing security with a welcoming and convenient office environment is always a challenging task. As Dr. Dey has spoken with employees looking to connect with the service functions located in the Ed Center, it became clear an access change was needed.
Employees can simply use their ID badge on the door access device to unlock the Ed Center's front doors during business hours. Staff not assigned to the Ed Center as their primary work location will need to sign in through the Raptor visitor management system. Visitors still will need to be buzzed into the Ed Center and sign in through Raptor.
This access control change is effective immediately. If you encounter a challenge with access please notify the district receptionist upon arrival.
Celebrate the New Edison School Building on October 25
We can’t thank you enough, but we can thank you again! Please join us to celebrate the grand opening of the new Edison Elementary School building on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
This fall students launched into the new school year in their modern, light-filled and new building. Now it’s time to open the doors and showcase the new building to the whole community, including the bond voters who made it possible.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will start at 5:30 p.m. with brief remarks from school leaders and local officials, plus a student performance. Community members can drop in to take an architect-led or self-guided tour of the school and explore its innovative indoor and outdoor learning spaces.
BONUS: Watch construction of the new North Eugene High School building—opening in fall 2023—and new Camas Ridge Elementary School building—opening in fall 2024! Aerial cameras installed at the construction sites show progress with time-lapse photos that refresh every 12 minutes.
