John Bramley Honored with the 2023 Richard W. Withington Award
The Richard W. Withington Award was established by Mr. Withington in 1981, and is presented
annually to honor an employee of the Hillsboro-Deering School District who is recognized as an
ambassador from the schools to the larger community, and who has achieved excellence in their
work, contributed significantly to the general welfare of students in ways above and beyond the
normal requirements of their job, offering students and adults alike a model of strong
professional behavior.
This year’s Withington Award recipient began their teaching career at Hillsboro-Deering Middle
School in 1996, transferring to the high school two years later, where they have been the living
embodiment of the traits the Withington Award was established to honor. There is no one more
deserving of recognition as an ambassador of the school district to the larger community. This
educator is a ubiquitous presence at both community and school events, never missing an
opportunity to greet people with a ready smile and easy connection.
This educator has given of their time and personal resources to coach sports, serve as a class

It is a great honor to announce Mr. John Bramley as the 2023 Richard W. Withington Award

Community Guests Teach Washington Elementary Students
Learning from the community is extremely important to the students and staff at Washington Elementary School. Opening their doors to local experts helps students make connections to their community and gives them real-world experiences that align with the curriculum.
On Wednesday, May 17th, Chris Bullock from The Wandering Bull in Washington visited the second and third grade class to teach them about Native Americans. They investigated artifacts, learned a dance, and learned that Native Americans wasted nothing. Students presented what they learned to the whole school during WES’s whole school morning meeting that Friday. They also led the students and families in the dance they learned. This experience gave students a firsthand account about the life of Native Americans as well as information about a local business.
On Thursday, May 18th, Josh, Jenny, and Izzy from Lucky 7 Farm in Washington visited the fourth and fifth graders to teach them about gardening and composting. Josh and Jenny taught the students about life on their farm, explained how to compost, brought some compost with them, and planted various plants and herbs in a new, raised bed garden area that the 4th and 5th graders are creating. The 4th and 5th graders plan to create a pollinator garden in this new area as well.
Having partners from the community share their experiences with the students provides them with context for the work they are completing in class. The time and effort of these volunteers is very much appreciated at Washington Elementary School!
