The Tiger Times
Lewistown Elementary School Newsletter, Nov. 14th
Dear Lewistown Families,
It was wonderful to celebrate so many students at our first Team Huddle! Each quarter, we take time to meet together as a Lewistown student community to celebrate individual students for their progress in iReady (math), LEXIA (ELA), Kind Kids, Top Tigers, Attendance and whole school progress! Our students met their goals this past quarter and each class had a GLOW Party to celebrate!
I'd like to share some wonderful news! We have been granted an Assistant Principal position for the remainder of the school year at LES! You will see our new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Burton, visiting Lewistown this week. Mrs. Burton has a wealth of experience in Frederick County Public Schools and is excited to join our team. Please show her a warm, Lewistown Tiger welcome!
Take care,
Mrs. Fockler
Principal, Lewistown Elementary School
🗣 Lewistown News & Updates
Welcome to Lewistown, Mrs. Burton, Assistant Principal
I've been in FCPS 20 + years and I'm a former classroom and special education teacher who has served as AP at Brunswick & Monocacy. My husband and I currently have 3 kids in college and I greatly enjoy time together as a family, watching our son play college soccer, and being outside walking and learning to play golf.
Welcome Megan Doll, new front office secretary!
Please welcome Ms. Doll as our new Lewistown Elementary School front office secretary!
A little bit about Ms. Doll:
My background is in psychology/ social work. I have worked in victim advocacy, school social work, ABA and with FCPS. I am married with an 18 year old son and a 13 year old daughter. We love lacrosse in my family and are huge Penn State and Steelers fans. 😊
🏫 Lewistown Safety Review
This school year, we have practiced and implemented our security protocols – Hold, Secure and Lockdown out of an abundance of caution at Lewistown Elementary School . We’ve also been fortunate to have a school resource officer at our school to support and partner with us.
Below you will find a review of our Lewistown 2023 Safety Procedures. We will continue to review these procedures throughout the school year. Please take note of our Reunification Process. It is very similar to our car rider dismissal, but there will be additional security measures in place for an emergency event.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Fockler at 240 236 3750. I appreciate your partnership!

Holiday Help
We know there are situations which can cause extreme pressure and place a burden on a family financially. It can be difficult to provide those necessary things, some of which are just basic needs. Again, Lewistown Elementary will be sponsoring a Giving Tree. If your family is in need of holiday help, please complete the form that was sent home on 11/9/23 in your child’s take-home folder. All information is strictly confidential. If you did not get a form, please email our school counselor, Joan Musselman at joan.musselman@fcps.org and she will be happy to help you.
Would you like to donate?
The tree will be set up in the schol on Monday November 13th if you would like to come and take some requests from the tree to fill them. Directions on how to fill requests will be provided.
🎯 LEWISTOWN STUDENT CELEBRATIONS
🏆 Lewistown Math News! 🏆
Each student has a weekly goal of completing 2 or more math lessons on iReady each week. We monitor these these lessons and have been recognizing students weekly who have been meeting the goal.
We exceeded our school goal of completing 2,000 lessons in Quarter 1! Wow! Wow! Wow!
LES is currently in the Top 12 (actually #5) in the county for iReady in meeting weekly goals!
We had our very first class reach 100% meeting the weekly goal - Go Mrs. Hoffman’s 4th Graders! Every student completed 2 or more lessons in one week!
Students can access iReady at home. MyPath Lessons are a great way to support students in developing skills they need to make growth. Students access iReady through Clever on the LES media center homepage or through the Clever app.
Directions to access Clever and iReady at home here.
Please contact Ms. Janney crystal.janney@fcps.org for iReady help!

Holiday Spotlight: Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Gratitude
Here are some tips for a healthy, happy Thanksgiving everyone will be thankful for.
Attitude of gratitude
Show your gratitude by doing activities that give back. This can be service activities, donation drives, anything that helps others and teaches your child about the importance of giving.
Cook together!
Cooking can help with motor, sensory, executive function and social-emotional skills.
Get Crafting!
Get in the fall spirit with some fun fall crafts! From spice wheels to leaf pressing, there are plenty of festive ways to get in the spirit right in your own home.
Make time for play!
Play games around the dinner table while you enjoy your meal. These dinner table activities will get everyone talking, laughing and making memories together.
Sing songs and dance together! We know music promotes bonding, so turn up the jams on Thanksgiving and celebrate together.
Respect everyone’s needs
All children have different needs depending on their age and the event’s significance. Expect that as conversations about holiday plans occur at school and home this may elevate emotion during this time of year. Make sure that everyone’s voice is heard, so that needs can be discussed in advance.
Communicate with your child’s school
Teachers can be the first to see that a child is more emotional in the classroom, or behaviors can rise during stress. If there has been a major life event that the Thanksgiving holiday could trigger for your child, please communicate ahead of time with the teacher and after the holiday to update them on your child’s needs. The collaboration between home and school can provide a major sense of stability for your child during a time of grief.
Welcome others to the table
Most communities are growing in multiculturalism and families may be experiencing Thanksgiving for the first time. Have your child or family invite a new friend to Thanksgiving, celebrating with new friends and other families. Families also may seek out other cultural experiences to add to their traditions.
Aim for connection and self-care
Most importantly it is a great time to connect and practice some self-care. Resist the overscheduling of the holiday or checking off the list of every food item on the table and opt for more quiet moments of connection with your children. Encourage children to take longer breaks from devices and engage in conversation with family and friends to express their emotions and increase overall social skills with others.
Connect from a distance
Send drawings and letters to family far away. Give your child a specific challenge, like “draw why you’re thankful for Grandma”, and send the drawing via mail or digitally to your loved ones.
