Message from the Superintendent: PYLUSD Hero - Ms. Valerie Hibbard
September 25, 2023
Dear PYLUSD Community,
Like all of you, I’m a parent. When I drop my three kids off at elementary school, the last thing on my mind is that one of them could choke to death on a corn dog at lunch… However, choking is actually the number one cause of injury and death among young children.
On Tuesday, September 19, during lunchtime, our noon duty supervisor (hero) Valerie Hibbard at Rio Vista Elementary School noticed one of our kindergarten children turning blue and not breathing. She sprung into action and quickly administered the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the corndog from the child's airway. Valerie may have saved a life of one of our own. If Valerie was on her phone, not paying attention, or distracted from her job, the outcome could have been horrific.
When I met with Valerie the next day I asked her how she knew what to do. She said it was instinctive and that she loves her students. Valerie was putting kids first and is a shining example of the best of PYL. No matter the job, we are all here for the students of PYL, and we are all thankful for Ms. Valerie Hibbard.
Sincerely,
Alex Cherniss, Ed.D.
