MASSABESIC HIGH SCHOOL
2023-2024

September 25, 2023
RSU 57 & Massabesic High School
"Preparing students for success in an ever-changing world."
Notes from the Principal...
This past week we conducted three practice drills for our Lockdown Procedures. Students and staff reviewed these procedures, we tested the alarm that will sound during such an event, and students/staff practiced the protocols in their classrooms. We will continue to review these protocols, in addition to evacuation procedures, throughout the school year.
On Thursday and Friday our students responded appropriately and effectively to updated expectations regarding passes in the hallways and reporting to classes on time. It should be noted that the vast majority of our student population do quite well with these expectations with very little prompting. We are relying on all our students and staff to be united in these expectations in order to increase learning opportunities for all.
Now that we are several weeks into the school year many of clubs and activities are in full swing. In addition to Fall Athletics we encourage students to participate in Chess Club/Game Club, Theater, and Student Council - these groups have also begun their meetings and activities. Our Student Council is fast at work on our Homecoming Week celebration (October 2nd-5th) week and our Homecoming Dance (October 7th).
A reminder that Friday, October 6th is a non-student day, and our Homecoming Football game is scheduled for that evening vs. Deering High School.

Updated Expectations - Student Passes & Class Attendance
The information below was shared with students and staff this morning as a result of some important discussions at our staff meeting yesterday (Wednesday, 9.20.23).
Students - please review the information shared with you during announcements.
Parents/Guardians - please review the information for your own awareness and I encourage you to discuss this with your student(s) if need be.
Student Passes
Any and all students who need to be out of their classrooms during any block (Homeroom, 1, 2, 3, Mustang Time, 4, 5, & 6) need a signed pass from a staff member.
Students - you may be and should be asked to show your pass to any staff member requesting to see them in the hallways and common areas.
Mustang Time & Passes
Students must report to their assigned Mustang Time teacher at the conclusion of Block 3.
Teachers will take attendance for their MT as soon as possible.
Students - you may leave your MT classroom to see another teacher ONLY IF you have a signed pass from the teacher that you would like to see.
Students - you may email with your MT teacher and the teacher you would like to see during MT, but you will still need a written pass to move through the hallway from one MT classroom to another MT classroom.
Students - you MAY NOT leave MT to go to another teacher to get a signed pass on the day of that MT.
You MUST plan ahead and request a pass from another teacher PRIOR to MT (either earlier that morning or the day before).
You should be prepared for teachers to SAY NO to your request to join their classroom during MT.
You should also be prepared to respond with respect if and when teachers say no. Remember that teachers have their own MT students to supervise and work with, and it may not be possible for them to take on more students at that time.
If you have a pass to go to another teacher during MT you must stay with that teacher for the entire MT.
Late to Class & Class Cuts
Our school wide goal for students this year is to increase your success in passing as many courses as possible. Our teachers come to work every day to teach you and help you pass those courses.
The best way for you to pass your courses is to be in class on time, and for the whole time. You owe it to yourselves to be on time for class and to remain in class - your success in passing your courses depends on it.
Today (Thursday, Sept. 21)) is your fair warning that the main office is running reports each block, including Mustang Time, to identify students who are late to their classes, or for students who have tried to cut, or skip, their class entirely.
Today (Thursday, Sept. 21) is also your fair warning that you have today and tomorrow to figure out your priorities and get to class on time and stay in class..
Starting next week - if you are late for your classes, or are found skipping your classes, we will be meeting with you, calling home to inform your parents and guardians that you will be staying after school to make up the time you missed with Mr. Fryzlewicz. You will be required to stay after school as an administration requirement. If there is a late bus you may be able to take that bus home, or your parents/guardians may need to come get you.
Closing on a positive note:
These updates to our school operations will be sent to you by email, and also sent to your parents & guardians by email. I am confident we can meet these expectations and increase our level of success.
I am proud of the student population at Massabesic High School - you have started out the school year in a solid way. It is wonderful to see you each day and I look forward to celebrating your success in the classroom, in clubs, in performances, and in athletics.
If you have any questions about the information you have received this morning please ask your teachers, or come see Mr. Fryzlewicz, Mr. Lavertu, or me, Mr. Thurlow.
