CSD Top 3
Your monthly school district newsletter
Thursday, Feb. 2
Dear Canby Families,
Please enjoy this month’s CSD Top 3, those three things we think you’d like to know, plus the monthly lunch menu. Happy reading!
Staff Spotlight
Packed in the stands at Canby High School’s assembly recently, with only a brief introduction as a hint, students started chanting his name before it was even announced. “Jim Barr, Jim Barr, Jim Barr!” Indeed, Canby bus driver Jim Barr is the recipient of Canby Educational Foundation’s annual HERO Award! Jim drives for trips and supports each team or group in their activities. It’s fitting the students were chanting his name as he can often be found cheering for them by name!
Then later that week, Canby High School Technical Assistant Evan Berry received the monthly CARE Award. The nomination said that Evan went above and beyond to serve CHS students this fall when he stepped up to get certified as a teacher to fill a gap. He developed curriculum, systems, and structures for the class. Now back in his regular role, Evan continues to share his depth of knowledge and build trust with students. Congrats, Evan!
The CARE Award will continue to rotate schools, with Carus up next in February followed by Eccles in March.
The CARE Award is co-sponsored by Canby Kiwanis and Columbia Bank, along with Wayward Sandwiches, Swan Island Dahlias, Wild Hare Saloon, Book Nook, Rice TIme Canby, Gwynn’s Coffeehouse, Backstop Bar & Grill, DirectLink, Puddin’ River Chocolates, Odd Moe’s Pizza, Cusforth’s Market, and Matt Olsen Insurance.
If there’s a Canby School District staff member who constantly wows you, there are a couple of ways to similarly honor them. There is still time to nominate for the 2023 Oregon Education Support Professional of the Year award and for the 2024 Teacher of the Year award, both through the end of February.
National School Counseling Week
Next week is National School Counseling Week. We are grateful in the Canby School District to have so many counselors and social workers to support our students. If you see one of them around town or at your school, please join us in giving them thanks! Those staff members are: Stacey Ackerman, Brett Curtis, Brynne Hager, Brittney Harmon, Dezi Johnson, Michelle Olson, Amie Mykisen, Trevor Lockwood, Colby Scheer, Sarah Fitts, Kelly Siewell, Carly Halverson, Janie Nicholas, and Kimberly Van.
Upcoming Community Events
Library Book Review
The Canby School District continues to offer opportunities for community members to review library books that are up for consideration to be added into circulation. Books will be displayed on Monday, Feb. 13 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Ackerman Library. To find a list of the titles for review and our review template, you can visit our CSD library page.
Supporting your Growing Reader
Next month, the district will host a family literacy night for attendees to learn more about early literacy development, dyslexia, and strategies for supporting young readers. Please save the date for the evening of Wednesday, March 1. We will share more information about the event as the date approaches.
Continuous Improvement Planning
This school year, we are renewing the district’s ongoing improvement plan and would like to share our process and priorities with the community. We thank our community members who have provided feedback and input to help inform this process. Please save the date for Tuesday, March 7. More info. to come!
What's for Lunch?
Check out the new monthly meal menus here. If you have not yet applied for free school meals, consider doing so today either online or using a paper application.
Please note that menus are subject to change.
Community Bulletin Board
For information on an upcoming dance clinic, father-daughter dance, and more, take a look at the flyers posted on our Community Bulletin Board. Note that flyers are submitted from outside Canby School District, and Canby School District does not sponsor or endorse them.
