October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Autumn is all about the leaves changing colors, the cooler temperatures as the season transitions to winter, and festive holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. But what many people may not realize, despite its popularity, is that October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In 1992, the pink ribbon became the official symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The White House was even decorated in pink in the year 2008 to help commemorate this annual event.

Viking Highlights
When Art and Music Collide
Please join us for the 4th Annual Collaborative Concert: When Art & Music Collide! This special event will be held in the Vandeventer cafeteria on Tuesday, October 5th. Viking artists have created works inspired by the music of our very own VMS Orchestra. Artwork will be on display at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 6 p.m. We hope to see you there!
Preparing for Art Show & Concert
This year's theme for When Art and Music Collide will honor Hispanic Heritage Month with music from the movie Coco. In preparation for the art show and concert, art students created works of art inspired while listening to the music in Orchestra. Creative pieces of artwork include papel picado, paper marigolds, sugar skulls, fall harvest still life drawings, and free choice works.

Lights Out
Did you know that approximately two billion birds migrate through Texas every year? Texas is a crucial place for migratory birds. Although sadly, bird populations across America are declining rapidly. Collisions with buildings and structures kill nearly one billion birds in the US every year. Most birds typically migrate at night and get disoriented by city lights. This is why bird conservation organizations like the National Audubon Society and Texas Conservation Alliance are requesting homeowners and building owners to turn off all nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the peak migration period, which extends through October 29th.

Previous Campus & District Information
Access middle school curriculum
Frisco ISD parents have access to the curriculum outline and pacing guides used Districtwide for each core course. The curriculum outlines are created and revised each year by District educators and are rooted in the statewide curriculum standards provided by the Texas Education Agency, called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS.) Access the curriculum and pacing page.
COVID Testing
Frisco ISD has partnered with Nomi Health, a COVID-19 testing facility, to make sure students and staff have convenient access to free PCR and antigen testing. The testing site located at the northwest corner of Technology Drive and World Cup Way has a priority access line for FISD staff and students. Individuals are not required to use Nomi Health. Learn more about registration.
Free online tutorials
Frisco ISD teachers are now offering weekly online tutorials in the evenings, saving parents time and money that might otherwise be spent on outside tutors. The tutorials are facilitated by District teachers who have worked with the Teaching and Learning Department to ensure alignment between what happens in the classroom and what is covered in online tutorials. Learn more about how to access the tutorials here.
Tutorials are at 6 p.m.:

Patriotic Essay Competition - $5,000 Award

Vandeventer students are invited to join the more than 138,000 students who participated last year in this contest. The national winners will receive at least $500. The first place national award is currently $5,000. Click this link for more details. Submissions are due Sunday, October 31st. Good luck Vikings!

COVID Case Notifications: Classroom Specific
Starting Monday, August 23, Frisco ISD will notify middle and high school parents if an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 was in the same classroom, extracurricular activity or after-school program as their student during the time period that the individual was infectious. These student-specific email notifications will be sent daily as positive cases are reported and will replace the more general campuswide notifications. We hope this change will provide families with more pertinent information to guide decisions affecting student health. Total campus case counts will continue to be reported weekly on the District website.
