January at John Haley
January, 2023
Message from Mrs. Amaris Bravo, Principal
Happy New Year and welcome back to school! We hope you had a safe and healthy Winter Break, and that your holidays were filled with warm, happy, and memorable moments with your children. Thank you for all your holiday wishes and generous support before the Winter Break. Your kindness is truly appreciated by our staff.
As we celebrate this new year, 2023, it is always a great time for looking back to the past, but more importantly, looking forward to the coming year. It is a time to reflect on the changes we want, or need, to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. So, as we begin 2023, I want to assure everyone that the high expectations in academics set from the beginning of the year will continue as we begin second semester.
Every day we visit classrooms to connect with students and teachers and to enjoy the excitement and learning taking place. When visiting, we see happy, respectful, and resilient children, who are engaged in their learning.
Finally, on behalf of our faculty and staff, thank you for your continued support of our students and the work we do for them. It is truly the community, parents, and staff partnering and working together that allows us to maintain the successes we have so long enjoyed here at John Haley! As always, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your teacher or me directly. We are here to work together to provide the best possible education for your student!
We send our best wishes to all our John Haley families for a safe, happy, and healthy 2023!
WINTER CLOTHING REMINDER
The colder weather is here! A reminder to bundle up your children very warmly!
This is just a friendly reminder that students need to come to school properly dressed for the weather. As the weather gets colder and wet, students need to have a proper winter jacket or sweater. Please remember to LABEL EVERYTHING!
Despite the cold weather, we will be going outside for recess for 15 minutes, unless there has been a weather advisory stating that we cannot go outside or the temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
In order to help us, you can practice having your child dress him/herself in winter gear. Please continue practicing zipping up jackets at home. Hopefully it won’t be a very cold and wet winter!!
Dress Code Guidelines:
Jackets, hoodies or sweaters:
- Solid colors ONLY
- No logos (unless it's the school logo)
- Must wear collared shirt underneath
- Hoods must be off the head during school hours
- Hoodies MUST not have big pockets/pouch in front
No coats, hats or bandanas to be worn during school hours.
Thanking you in advance.
A Closer Look at Respect
What is Respect?
Respect is the willingness and ability to act professionally and thoughtfully with ourselves and others. Leaders can deal respectfully with opposition and provide space for both dignity and differences to coexist.
Why focus on Respect?
- Respect contributes to a positive culture. People feel safe, supported, and engaged in the context of thoughtful social, emotional, civic, and intellectual interactions.
- Respect decreases conflict. Respect helps us, and others, to be able to express ourselves without fear of being judged, humiliated, or discriminated against.
- Respect encourages empathy. Respect helps us to understand each other and put ourselves in someone else shoes.
Respect in Action:
- Teach students words have power. How we talk to others, and ourselves, can motivate or discourage, connect or destroy, hurt or heal. We should choose our words with care.
- Create opportunities for group decision-making. Open dialogue engages students in a process where compromise is crucial to making decisions.
- Vary protocols for classroom sharing. Frequently use open-ended questions, partner sharing, and small group activities to connect and promote understanding between students.
