THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
This week students practiced both their writing skills as well as kindness as they made valentines cards for friends and family!
In social studies this week we learned about Presidents and Patriots. We are also learning about African American accomplishments in STEM as a part of black history month.
In science kindergarteners have begun learning about how objects move in different ways and how to describe those different movements.
FIRST
The students have been using their five senses to observe living things. We are preparing to go to Gatorland on April 7th. They also practiced telling time and counting money. They have also been learning about U.S. presidents and patriots. We are studying many important people during our Black History Project. Don’t forget to come and join us during the Black History night next Thursday, February 23rd. The class was very enthusiastic about sharing their Valentine’s with their friends and wearing red and pink.
SECOND
Ms. Sonn’s second grade class has been busy lately with many fun activities and much learning. We read outside during Celebrate Literacy week. We learned so much in our studies and did great on our Reading module and Math topic. We have been engaged in many hands-on activities.
We completed a Science lab studying rocks and minerals. We also had a fun science lab celebrating the 100th day of school.
At our Awards Ceremony, students were honored with the awards they earned.
This week, we went to a Kindergarten class to share the love as the 2nd graders read a special valentine story to their Kindergarten buddies.
THIRD
Students in Mr. Frazer’s class have been working on something creepy and crawly: farming bugs for FOOD! Our students have been charged with answering the question “Should America begin farming bugs for food?” to practice our opinion writing!
As we’re also learning about the value and importance of primary accounts in reading, we decided to spice up our own essays by tasting some crickets in class as well! You would be shocked by the number of students asking for seconds, even if just a fallen leg at the bottom of the bag!
FOURTH
This week our class continues learning about fractions and adding fractions. In science we are learning about different rocks and how to recognize them. We had our first stem buddies. Where our 4th graders acted as the teacher. Our students absolutely loved it.
FIFTH
Mrs. Galan’s class just finished the unit on the human body. They made human body organs t-shirts so students could understand the location and relative size of their organs.
In Math Mrs. Galan is going over shapes and volume. Her class created geometric animals with different quadrilaterals and triangles.
SIXTH
In 6th Grade Math class, we started a new unit this week, Unit 11: Expressions and Inequalities. In this unit, we will apply what we learned about order operations in 5th grade to evaluate algebraic expressions with and without grouping symbols. We will also learn how to use substitution to evaluate algebraic expressions.
In 6th grade STEM class, we finished with our first Engineering Design (Model Membrane). Students were able to solve problems and present their solutions in class.
This week, we started our Eie Part 2 (No Bones about It: Designing Knee Brace).
This unit, students are introduced to the field of Biomedical engineering and how biomedical engineers use their knowledge of the human body to design technologies to solve problems related to biology, health, and medicine. Hands-on activities, discussions, and readings focus on EDP (Engineering Design Process) and also reinforce science concepts related to Skeletal and Muscular System. (Sample reference materials below)
Our class also conducted an awarding ceremony to recognize students’ academic efforts. If you want to have a copy of your child’s awarding photo, you can email me directly so I can send it to you. 😀
SPECIALS
This week in Art Class our classes in grades 3,4, and 5 focused on the Principle of Design/Art, PATTERN. Students created a drawing divided into several sections and filled each with a variety of patterns. We looked at various artworks and talked about how pattern is a predictable repetition of the Element of Art, Line. They learned that color can also enhance the pattern. Everyone did a great job with their designs and craftsmanship. We are learning and practicing this!
STEM BUDDIES
This week’s STEM Buddies were Ms. Laura’s Kindergarten with Ms. Greene’s 4th grade students and Ms. Rouis’ Kindergarten with Ms. Patel’s 4th grade students. Once again, they had lots of fun collaborating, building their LEGO Land Yachts, learning about forces and motion, and. . . racing them! 😊
